The steps below are for the Steam PC release of The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and its expansions; console and mobile versions may need different fixes. To narrow it down, note your operating system, game edition and installed DLC, when the problem began, and the exact error or behavior.
Start with the symptom and your game version
Before changing files or settings, identify what fails and what changed just before it began. On Steam, check whether you are running Rebirth, Afterbirth, or Afterbirth+ and whether the required DLC is installed. If you use mods, record which ones are enabled. Make one change at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Won’t launch or exits immediately: check recent expansion or mod changes, then investigate graphics support and game files.
- Runs at the wrong speed or has shader/performance trouble: test the relevant graphics settings reversibly.
- Audio or controls misbehave: inspect speaker configuration or legacy controller settings.
- Save or cloud issue: protect your save files before moving, deleting, or replacing anything; the available guidance does not establish a universal save-recovery fix.
If the game will not launch or crashes at startup
Check expansions and mods first
A developer-marked Steam Community Known Issues post, last edited September 28, 2020, associates some Afterbirth startup crashes with leftover Rebirth mods. It associates Afterbirth+ startup problems with missing Afterbirth DLC or mods. Confirm the edition and DLC you intend to run, then temporarily disable Workshop mods to see whether the game starts. If you consider moving or removing old mod files, back up your saves first.
The same post suggests setting EnableMods=0 in the relevant options file for an Afterbirth+ mod-related startup problem. This is historical configuration guidance, not a guaranteed fix for every current build. Record the original value and restore it if the change does not help.

Check graphics support and Steam files
If the startup log reports a GLFW/OpenGL context error, the post points to unsupported OpenGL extensions or graphics drivers as possible causes. It lists OpenGL 2.0 support as required and OpenGL 3.0 as recommended. These figures come from the post last edited in 2020, so treat them as historical guidance rather than a definitive statement of compatibility for every current system.
- Install current graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer.
- If your computer has both integrated and discrete graphics, set the game to use the discrete GPU.
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties, go to Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam can redownload damaged or missing files.
Change one thing at a time and retry the game. Do not delete saves as a launch troubleshooting step.

If the game runs too fast, too slowly, or has shader problems
The 2020 Known Issues post suggests a few reversible experiments. Their usefulness depends on the specific symptom and system; they are not universal fixes.
- Unstable speed or frame rate: test VSync off in
options.ini. Note its original setting so you can revert. - Shader or visual-performance trouble: test disabling visual effects in
config.ini. - Weak graphics hardware: the post suggests changing
MaxRenderScalefrom2to1. This may reduce rendering load, but the post warns it can make scrolling choppier and scaled sprites show artifacts.
Back up the configuration file before editing it. If a change makes the game look or feel worse, restore the saved original value.

If sound or controls misbehave
The same historical post suggests checking audio output mode for missing or one-sided sound effects: try another speaker mode, such as Stereo instead of Surround, or the reverse if appropriate for your setup.
For crackling audio from USB-connected equipment, or a keyboard symptom the post describes as a stuck key, it suggests setting ControllerHotplug=0. Note the current setting before changing it; for crackling, it also suggests trying a non-USB connection if one is available. These are legacy configuration suggestions, not confirmed fixes for every modern system.

Check the PC requirements, with their limits
Steam’s PC listings state a minimum of 2 GB RAM and 449 MB of available storage. These are store-listed minimums, not guarantees that the game will run correctly on a particular computer. For Windows users, Steam’s client support requirement has been Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024. The game’s own store minimums and Steam client requirements are separate considerations.
If the problem continues
Steam’s support listing points to Nicalis at [email protected]. The developer-marked issue post asks players reporting unlisted bugs to provide a detailed description and relevant logs, crash dumps, screenshots, or saved games. Share diagnostic files only through an official support route, and avoid posting personal information publicly.

When contacting support, include your operating system, game edition and DLC, whether mods are enabled, when the issue started, the exact error message, and the steps you have already tried. That helps distinguish a general launch failure from an edition-specific or configuration problem.
