The Epic Games Launcher can feel slow for three different reasons: the launcher window or library may take a long time to respond, downloads may run below the speed your internet plan suggests, or the rate may repeatedly fall to zero while a game is installing. Those symptoms do not point to one universal fault.
In most cases, the limiting resource is the path between Epic’s servers, your network, the launcher process and the drive that is installing the game. A busy or slow drive can make the download pause while files are written and unpacked. Wi-Fi interference, an unfavorable network route, a proxy, DNS problems or an Epic service incident can limit the connection. Cache and launcher configuration can also cause sluggish behavior.

| Symptom | Most likely bottleneck to test first | Useful observation |
|---|---|---|
| Launcher window, store or library loads slowly | Launcher cache, launcher process, background disk or network activity | Whether the interface improves after a clean restart and cache clear |
| Download stays at a low, fairly steady rate | Network path, download limit, DNS, proxy, filtering or Epic service capacity | Whether Ethernet or another connection changes the rate |
| Rate repeatedly drops to zero, then resumes | Install drive writing or unpacking downloaded chunks | Disk active time and write activity rise during each pause |
| Several users or devices are slow at once | Internet connection or service availability | Whether another device and another download show the same problem |
A zero displayed in the download panel is not automatically proof that the internet stopped. Epic explains that, after some files are downloaded, the launcher can stop receiving data while it installs those files to the disk; downloading resumes after the drive finishes the write operation.
How installation makes a fast connection look slow
Game installation is a pipeline. The launcher receives chunks, verifies or prepares them, writes them to the selected install drive and may unpack them. If the drive cannot complete its work as quickly as new chunks arrive, the launcher has to pause incoming data. The network can be healthy while the displayed rate is zero.
Check the drive during a pause
- Start the game download and wait until the rate falls sharply or reaches zero.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Windows Task Manager and select Performance, then the disk that contains the Epic installation.
- Watch Active time, read/write throughput and response activity. If active time is near 100% while the network rate is low, storage is a credible limiting resource.
- For more detail, press Win+R, enter
resmon, open the Disk tab and look for Epic, installer, antivirus or another process using the same drive.
Near-100% active time is a diagnostic observation, not a guaranteed benchmark or a promise that a particular upgrade will save a fixed number of seconds.

What makes storage the bottleneck
- Hard-disk drives: Mechanical seek time can make many small writes and unpacking operations compete with one another.
- A nearly full drive: Low free space can increase housekeeping work and leave less room for temporary installation data.
- Concurrent activity: Another game, a large file copy, indexing or an update can consume the same drive.
- Security scanning: Antivirus software may inspect newly created files as they arrive, adding work to the write path.
If the drive is consistently the limiting resource, an internal SSD that matches the computer’s available SATA or NVMe interface is the defensible hardware upgrade. Do not expect a universal percentage improvement: Epic publishes no controlled speed or launch-time benchmark for moving an installation to an SSD.
Do not confuse launcher requirements with performance guarantees
Epic’s current Windows launcher requirements list Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processor, and 700 MB of available storage. The page says the new launcher is designed for the same hardware as the legacy launcher. Those figures describe the launcher itself; they do not guarantee that a particular game will install quickly, because the game’s size, decompression work, drive and network path are separate constraints.
Network checks in the safest order
When disk activity is quiet, follow Epic’s slow-download sequence. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which test mattered.

- Check Epic’s public status page first. Review the entries for Game Services, Store, Download/Installation, Player Data Storage and Support-A-Creator. If Download/Installation is degraded, local changes will not repair an Epic-side incident.
- Test wired Ethernet. Connect the PC directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same download. This tests Wi-Fi interference, signal quality and retransmissions. It cannot guarantee a higher rate if the Epic service, your ISP route or the install drive is the bottleneck.
- Try another internet connection. A different fixed line or a phone hotspot can reveal an ISP route or local-router problem. Keep in mind that a hotspot may have its own data limits and radio congestion.
- Confirm the launcher’s download limit is off. In the launcher’s settings, find the download-throttling or speed-limit option and disable it for the test. A manually imposed limit can look exactly like a slow connection.
- Check domain allow-listing and security filtering. Security software, firewalls, DNS filters and managed networks can block or delay the domains the launcher needs. Allow the required Epic domains according to Epic’s support instructions rather than disabling protection permanently.
- Flush the local DNS cache. Open Windows Terminal (Administrator) or Command Prompt (Administrator), run
ipconfig /flushdns, wait for the confirmation, then restart the launcher. This removes stale local DNS answers; it does not increase the capacity of your internet plan. - Test a public DNS resolver. Configure a reputable public DNS service on the network adapter or router, reconnect and repeat the download. If there is no change, restore the previous setting; DNS affects name resolution and routing choices, not the write speed of the install drive.
- Disable proxy servers for the test. In Windows, open Settings → Network & internet → Proxy and turn off a manually configured proxy or setup script that you do not need. Also check whether a VPN or security product is forcing traffic through an additional gateway.
If Ethernet, another connection and a clean DNS/proxy test all produce the same result while the drive is idle, the remaining possibilities include Epic-side capacity, the ISP route or filtering that is still active on the PC or network.

A damaged or stale launcher cache can make the interface slow or cause odd download behavior. Clearing it is a reversible diagnostic step, not a guaranteed throughput upgrade.
Clear the Windows launcher cache
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher from its system-tray icon, then confirm it is no longer running in Task Manager.
- Press Win+R, enter
%localappdata%EpicGamesLauncherSavedand press Enter. - Delete folders whose names begin with
webcache(for example, a numbered webcache folder). Do not delete your installed game folders. - Start the launcher again and allow it to rebuild the cache. Test the same download or library view before changing another variable.
Epic’s troubleshooting guidance also directs users to obtain the latest launcher installer when troubleshooting. Reinstalling or updating the launcher should be considered after the status, storage and network checks, and you should close the launcher before running the installer.

Why a fast internet plan does not guarantee a fast Epic download
An advertised connection speed measures the access link under specified conditions. The launcher’s effective rate is the lowest capacity in a chain that includes Epic’s service, the route through your ISP, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, local filtering, the launcher’s settings and the install drive. Installation work can therefore make a fast line appear idle for periods even though data is being processed locally.
Conversely, a steady low rate with little disk activity points away from storage. A download limit, weak Wi-Fi, a proxy, DNS or firewall filtering, an ISP route and an Epic service event can all produce that pattern. The useful comparison is not “Epic versus another launcher” in the abstract; it is whether the same PC, connection and drive behave differently when one controlled variable changes.

- Use the same PC and the same wired or wireless connection.
- Compare games installed on the same physical drive, not one on an SSD and one on an HDD.
- Observe disk active time and write activity while each download runs.
- Record whether the rate is steady or arrives in bursts followed by installation pauses.
- Repeat at a different time if Epic’s status page reports no incident but service capacity may be fluctuating.
Different content servers, compression methods and installation pipelines can make two launchers display different rates. Without a controlled test, a faster number in one launcher does not prove that Epic is defective or that your internet plan is underperforming.
Decision guide: what to change and when
| Test result | Likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Disk active time spikes exactly when the rate reaches zero | Install drive is writing, unpacking or being scanned | Stop competing disk work, ensure adequate free space and consider an internal SSD matched to SATA or NVMe |
| Ethernet is clearly steadier than Wi-Fi | Wireless interference, signal or retransmission problem | Use Ethernet for large installs or improve the wireless path; do not assume the ISP needs an upgrade |
| Another connection is faster | ISP route, router or local network issue | Investigate the slower connection and retest without a proxy or VPN |
| Download limit was enabled | Launcher setting was throttling the transfer | Turn the limit off and retest |
| Cache clear fixes a slow interface | Stale or damaged launcher cache | Keep the rebuilt cache and monitor; no hardware change is indicated |
| Status page shows Download/Installation degradation | Epic service incident | Wait for service recovery rather than repeatedly changing PC settings |
| No test changes anything and disk remains idle | Unresolved route, filtering or service-capacity issue | Check firewall and required domains, verify proxy settings and consult Epic support with the test results |
Common mistakes that waste time
- Buying an SSD before checking disk activity: An SSD helps only when storage is the limiting stage; it cannot fix a throttled setting or an Epic outage.
- Reading a zero as a network failure: Watch the install drive during the pause first.
- Changing Wi-Fi, DNS, proxy and security settings simultaneously: You lose the evidence that identifies the real cause and may leave an unnecessary exception in place.
- Disabling security permanently: Use a short, controlled test and restore protection. Prefer allowing required domains over removing safeguards.
- Comparing advertised megabits with the launcher’s displayed number without checking units: Internet plans commonly use megabits per second, while software may display megabytes per second. The display can also fall while files are being installed.
- Assuming the launcher’s 700 MB requirement covers the game: It does not; each game has its own storage and performance demands.
When to escalate
Contact Epic support after you have noted the status-page result, whether Ethernet changed the behavior, whether another connection changed it, the launcher-limit setting, cache-clearing result, proxy/DNS checks and disk activity during a pause. That information separates a service-side problem from a local storage or network path problem and avoids repeating generic fixes.
The practical verdict is simple: make the bottleneck visible first. Cyclical zeroes with a busy install drive are usually an installation pipeline issue; steady low rates with an idle drive call for network and service checks; a sluggish interface after those tests justifies clearing the launcher cache and updating the installer. No first-party benchmark establishes a universal percentage gain from any one fix, so the measured behavior of your PC should determine the next change.
