The name is usually explained as a nod to building a fort to survive the night, the core idea of Fortnite’s original cooperative mode, Save the World. That explanation is widely repeated, but the official Epic Games material reviewed for this question describes the game’s premise without stating why the name was chosen. Treat the fort-and-night link as a popular interpretation, not a confirmed origin.
Where the popular explanation comes from
Save the World is a cooperative player-versus-environment campaign. Players build defenses and fight back waves of monsters, and holding a fortification through the night is central to that premise. Because the game’s original concept revolves around this, secondary outlets such as HP Tech Takes connect the name to fort-building and nighttime defense. That link is reasonable given the game’s design, but it is an outside reading of the title rather than a documented statement from Epic.

What Epic’s official material confirms
Three official or developer-facing sources describe the game’s premise and development direction:
- Epic Games Support, “How to play Fortnite Save the World” and Epic Developer Community, “Save the World” both describe the mode as a cooperative PvE campaign against monster hordes.
- Epic Games, “Fortnite Save the World Update | State of Development” (June 30, 2020) said Save the World would leave Early Access as a premium experience and that new content development would slow. This describes the plan announced in 2020, not the current state of every feature or offer.
None of these sources explains the name. No verbatim statement from a named Epic representative about who chose the title or why was found in the sources reviewed, so no naming quote is attributed here.

The “fortnight” wordplay
Some readers hear the word as “fortnight,” an old English term for a two-week period. EBSCO Research Starters, a secondary reference, describes this as a theory and says Epic has not officially revealed the origin. The official sources reviewed here do not confirm it either. It is a plausible-sounding reading, but it should be presented as speculation.
Why many players now know it as Battle Royale
Epic announced in 2017 that Battle Royale would become free for everyone on September 26, 2017, while Save the World remained a paid Early Access game. The name therefore covers two different products: the paid cooperative campaign that inspired the title and the free competitive mode that most people now associate with it. That split is why the fort-and-night explanation can feel disconnected from the game as many players know it today.

In short, the defensible answer is that the name most likely reflects the original Save the World concept of defending a fort at night, but Epic’s official materials have not been shown to state that as the reason for the title.
