If the Minecraft Launcher says to buy the game, first check which Microsoft account is signed in. The account in the Launcher—and in the Microsoft Store—needs to own the edition you want to play, or have an active PC Game Pass subscription that provides access. A Buy button only tells you that the account and edition being checked do not currently show ownership; it does not prove that another account never bought the game.
Check the account before doing anything else
- Sign out of the Launcher. Sign back in with the Microsoft account you used to buy Minecraft. Minecraft identifies a wrong-account sign-in as a likely reason the Play button is missing: Play Button Not Appearing for Minecraft in the Minecraft Launcher.
- Check the Microsoft Store account. Open the Microsoft Store app, select its profile, and confirm it is signed in with the same account. Minecraft recommends checking the Launcher and Store accounts together.
- Verify which account made the purchase. Look for the purchase confirmation email and check Microsoft account order history. If you believe the account is right but sign-in is still failing, Minecraft says signing into the Xbox app first can sometimes resolve sign-in errors. Check that the Xbox profile shows the expected email and gamertag: Verify Your Account Owns Minecraft.
- Check the exact edition. In the Launcher or Microsoft Store, look for Play, Install, or “You Own This” for the edition you want. Minecraft says Buy is shown for editions the signed-in account does not own: Find Out Which PC Editions of Minecraft You Own.
Make sure you are checking the right kind of access
Purchased Minecraft account
Ownership is tied to the account used for the purchase. If the Launcher is signed into a different Microsoft account, it may show Buy even though the game is owned elsewhere. Use the order history and confirmation email to identify the purchasing account, then sign into that account in both the Launcher and Microsoft Store.

PC Game Pass
If you played through Xbox Game Pass for PC rather than buying Minecraft outright, check that the PC subscription is still active. Minecraft says an active subscription is required for access through Game Pass. See Minecraft’s Launcher sign-in guidance.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition on PC
Minecraft says Java Edition and Bedrock Edition were released as a PC bundle on June 7, 2022. Accounts that own that PC product, including players who migrated a Mojang account to a Microsoft account, should have both PC versions. Check each edition in the Launcher or Store rather than assuming a purchase for a different platform grants a PC license. The ownership check is explained in Find Out Which PC Editions of Minecraft You Own.

Old Mojang account that was never migrated
Minecraft says the Mojang-account migration grace period ended on December 18, 2023, and its Support team no longer handles migration-related queries. Its guidance says players who need to continue playing Java Edition can purchase it using a Microsoft account; do not count on Support to migrate an old Mojang account now. Details are on Information about Mojang Accounts and Microsoft Account Migration.
If Bedrock opens in trial mode
Trial mode can point to an account or Launcher problem rather than a missing purchase. Confirm that the Microsoft account shown in the Launcher is the one with ownership or subscription access. On Windows, Minecraft also recommends repairing the Launcher app as a troubleshooting step. See Minecraft’s Launcher guidance and its instructions for removing Bedrock trial mode.

When the account checks do not fix it
- Keep the purchase confirmation email, order-history details, and any transaction identifiers. Minecraft says a confirmation email with a transaction ID is useful evidence when checking whether a purchase succeeded. An order number alone may also appear for a failed transaction; Minecraft distinguishes a unique successful transaction ID in its duplicate-charge guidance: Minecraft Transaction IDs.
- For Microsoft Store purchases made after July 25, 2022, Minecraft directs purchase troubleshooting to Microsoft Support. Minecraft Player Care cannot handle account support for Microsoft Store purchases or purchases from unauthorized websites, resellers, or other players. For older Mojang purchases, Player Care uses transaction IDs to verify ownership. See Minecraft’s transaction guidance.
- If the Launcher itself has a dependency or installation problem, Minecraft’s general Launcher guidance recommends reinstalling it as a troubleshooting step. When the specific message is Buy, check the account and license before treating reinstalling as the fix: Minecraft Launcher troubleshooting.
Only buy the game if you confirm the account does not own it
Do not repurchase Minecraft just because one signed-in account shows Buy. First check the purchasing account, order history, edition, and any Game Pass access. If those checks confirm that you do not own the game, Minecraft Help lists prepaid Minecraft cards as a purchase option available at select retail stores.
