Those checks help separate a problem with one disc from a storage issue, an installation error, or a possible console disc-reading fault.
Check the disc and how it is inserted
With the PS5 standing vertically on its stand, the disc’s labeled side should face left as you insert it. Eject the disc, check its orientation, and reinsert it. If the console is horizontal, follow the orientation shown for that position in PlayStation’s disc troubleshooting guide.

Clean the disc if it is dirty or fingerprinted
Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. Wipe from the center of the disc toward its edge. Cleaning can remove dirt and fingerprints, but it will not necessarily fix a damaged disc or a problem with the console’s drive. A suitable disc-cleaning cloth is an optional aid; it is not a scratch repair.
Test whether the issue is the disc or the console
Try another PS5 game disc or another supported Blu-ray Disc or DVD. If other discs work but one game does not, the evidence points toward that disc. If several supported discs fail, the console’s disc-reading function may be involved. This cross-test is a useful clue, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so those are not valid tests. PlayStation’s disc guide explains supported media and the recommended troubleshooting checks.
Choose the fix that matches the error code
If an error appears, note its full code before changing settings. PlayStation’s PS5 error-code support pages distinguish disc-reading problems from storage limits, mismatched disc content, and failed installation.

Try Safe Mode only after the basic checks
If orientation, cleaning, cross-testing, and the relevant code-specific steps do not help, PlayStation’s disc guide recommends Safe Mode options including Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Use the official instructions to enter Safe Mode and select those options; do not interrupt the console while it is working.

If multiple supported discs still fail after the recommended troubleshooting, or the disc problem remains unresolved, use PlayStation’s disc troubleshooting guide to reach PlayStation Repairs. PlayStation says to visit Repairs when its troubleshooting steps do not fix the issue.

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is a later, destructive step—not a routine first fix. PlayStation warns that reinstalling system software deletes all information on the console. Before considering it, back up your data and follow PlayStation’s official backup and system software reinstallation instructions.
