The US recommended price is now $899.99, up from the $699.99 launch price, effective April 2, 2026. Sony attributes the increase to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” and has not published a breakdown of what each part of the console costs. The premium it asks for is tied to a stronger GPU, faster memory, Sony’s PSSR upscaling, and advanced ray tracing, but how much of that you notice depends on the games you play and the display you own.
What the PS5 Pro costs now
The number most people remember, $699.99, was the PS5 Pro’s launch price. Sony announced it on September 10, 2024, and the console went on sale November 7, 2024. That is no longer the recommended price. Sony announced a revised price on March 27, 2026, and the new prices took effect April 2, 2026.

The percentage increases are calculated from the launch and revised recommended prices listed above. Recommended prices are not the same as what a store charges, and retailers can sell below them or, in some markets, above them. Check the local Sony PlayStation store or a retailer in your country before deciding, because a price comparison from one region does not apply to another.
Why Sony says it raised the price
Sony’s explanation is brief. In its March 27, 2026 announcement, Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President, Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment, said:

“With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.”
The increase covered the standard PS5 and the PlayStation Portal as well as the Pro, so the change is not specific to the top-tier model. The announcement does not split the increase among component costs, manufacturing, tariffs, or other expenses. Any explanation that names a specific cost driver for the PS5 Pro’s price goes beyond what Sony has published. If you see a bill-of-materials estimate or a claim that a single part or tariff accounts for the increase, treat it as speculation unless it comes from Sony.
What the premium is meant to buy
Sony’s hardware case for the Pro rests on four claims from its September 2024 product announcement and a 2026 software update. Each one is a company claim, not an independent measurement.
A larger GPU
Sony says the Pro’s GPU has 67% more compute units than the standard PS5 of its time. That is a hardware specification and is the basis for most of the performance claims. Sony’s statement that the system can deliver up to 45% faster gameplay rendering is a separate claim, and it is not a guarantee that every game will run 45% faster. Real-world gains depend on whether a game is built to use the extra capacity.

Faster memory
Sony states that the Pro’s memory is 28% faster than the then-current PS5. As with the GPU figure, this is a specification comparison. It does not tell you how much frame rate or load time will change in a particular title.
PSSR upscaling and ray tracing
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s image reconstruction technology, which renders a game at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image. Sony also advertises advanced ray tracing. Both features depend on the game. Sony says enhanced features vary by title and can require a compatible display. At launch, Sony listed more than 50 enhanced games. That was a launch-time count, not a current catalogue total.

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
In March 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR version. It adds support for named games and an optional system setting for games that already support PSSR. Sony cautions that results vary by title, so the update should be judged game by game rather than as a blanket improvement.
| Sony claim | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 67% more GPU compute units | Hardware comparison with the standard PS5 at the time of the 2024 announcement | Not a proportional frame-rate or visual gain in every game |
| 28% faster memory | Memory speed comparison with the then-current PS5 | Not a measured effect on any specific game |
| Up to 45% faster gameplay rendering | Sony’s maximum claim for rendering speed | Not an independent benchmark, and not a typical result |
| More than 50 enhanced games | Launch-time count from 2024 | Not the current number of games with Pro enhancements |
| Upgraded PSSR (March 2026) | Expanded game support and an optional system setting | Not a uniform image-quality improvement across titles |
What is included, and what costs extra
The launch announcement lists a 2TB SSD, one DualSense wireless controller, and the pre-installed game Astro’s Playroom. Sony’s US product page says the Disc Drive and Vertical Stand are sold separately. It also says an internet connection is required to pair the Disc Drive with the PS5 Pro during setup.

- Included: 2TB SSD, one DualSense controller, Astro’s Playroom pre-installed.
- Sold separately: PS5 Disc Drive, Vertical Stand.
- Setup requirement for the Disc Drive: an internet connection to pair it with the PS5 Pro.
Because the console is sold without the Disc Drive, physical games and Blu-ray discs require an extra purchase. Buyers who only download games do not need it. If you want vertical placement, the stand is also an optional cost. Neither accessory is necessary for everyone, but both should be added to the total if you plan to use them.
Is the premium worth it for you?
Whether the PS5 Pro is worth its price depends on your situation. No independent, current like-for-like study has established whether the Pro’s benefits justify the cost for a typical buyer. The following checks give you a practical basis for deciding.
- Check your local price. Compare the recommended price for your region with what retailers are actually charging. The US figure of $899.99 is not the price everywhere.
- List the games you play most. If they support PSSR or other Pro enhancements, the upgrade has a clearer use. If they are older titles or do not have enhanced modes, the Pro’s extra power may not show up.
- Check your display. Some enhanced features need a compatible display. A standard TV may not show the difference Sony describes.
- Count the total setup cost. Add the Disc Drive if you buy physical media, and the Vertical Stand if you want it. Compare that total against the standard PS5 in your market.
- Decide how much image quality and performance matter to you. The Pro’s advantages are largest for players who value higher frame rates and sharper images in supported games. Players who mostly play on a standard display or in games without enhancements will get less from the premium.
The price increase is a decision Sony made for stated economic reasons, and Sony has not shown how much of it reflects the Pro’s hardware. The Pro’s value is conditional. For a buyer who plays supported games on a compatible display, the premium may be justified. For everyone else, the standard PS5 or waiting for a price change may be the more sensible choice.
Sony’s specifications and statements are the main official sources for the claims above. The price, configuration, and feature details were current as of Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement and the April 2, 2026 effective date.
