If The Sims 3 will not start from the EA app, the cause depends on where launch stops: the EA app may be stuck preparing the game, the Sims 3 launcher may show an error, or the game may crash while loading. Start with EA’s repair option, then follow the branch that matches what you see rather than trying every fix at once.
First, identify where launch stops
Click Play once and note what happens. Does nothing open, does the EA app stay on “Preparing game,” does the Sims 3 launcher appear, or does the game begin loading and then close? Also note whether you are on Windows or macOS and copy any exact error message or code. Those details determine which steps apply.

Try the low-impact EA app fixes
Repair The Sims 3
- Open the EA app and go to Library.
- Open the game tile’s three-dot menu and select Repair.
- Wait for the repair to finish, then try launching the game again.
EA recommends repairing a game that will not load from the app. See EA’s game-loading troubleshooting guidance.
Test the in-game overlay on PC
If you are on PC and the game still will not launch, temporarily turn off the EA app’s in-game overlay and try again. EA notes that the overlay can sometimes contribute to a game crash. If disabling it changes nothing, turn it back on after the test; the overlay supports features such as invites and messages. The same EA troubleshooting page covers the overlay test.

If the EA app is stuck preparing the game
Clear the EA app cache using EA’s instructions for your app version. Then retry. EA also recommends checking whether other background applications are limiting app performance, installing available Windows and graphics-card updates and drivers, and trying a clean boot. A clean boot is a diagnostic test, not a permanent configuration; follow the instructions for your operating system. Details are in EA’s game-loading guidance.
If the Sims 3 launcher appears but loading crashes
Test without custom content
Custom content can cause a crash during loading, but it is not a universal explanation for every launch failure. In the Sims 3 launcher, open Installed Content, select Run without custom content, and test the game. If it loads, add content back one item at a time to find the item associated with the failure. EA documents this as a load-time troubleshooting step in its Sims 3 troubleshooting guide.

For “Version incompatible” after removing a pack
Use this fix only if the launcher displays “Version incompatible”, particularly after a pack was uninstalled. EA says a leftover file can cause that message. Close the game and launcher, go to Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3, remove Version.tag, then restart the launcher. EA says the game recreates the file. See the EA Sims 3 guide.
Use the Mac steps only for a matching Mac problem
Cache files and thumbnails
For a potentially corrupted save or a custom-content issue on Mac, EA’s Sims 3 guide describes removing CASPartCache.package, compositorCache.package, scriptCache.package, and simCompositorCache.package, along with files in the Thumbnails folder. Back up your saves and any mods or custom content before changing game files, and follow the full EA instructions.

Access and disk permissions
If the EA app cannot access needed files, check whether it has Full Disk Access in macOS privacy settings. If the game is on an external drive, check that the app has write access to it. EA’s Sims 3 page also describes a permission-repair remedy for macOS X Yosemite or earlier; do not apply that legacy instruction as a general fix for current macOS versions, which manage system file permissions differently. If the EA app shows EC:10701
EC:10701 is an EA app communication error, not a default explanation for every Sims 3 launch failure. EA associates it with a communication problem involving port 3216. Restart the EA app and your device first. If the error persists, check for virtual network adapters or a VPN and investigate whether another application is using that port, following EA’s guidance. Avoid changing network settings unless this code is the error you actually see. See EA’s EA app error-code guide.

When to contact EA support
If the game still will not launch, collect the exact error text or code, your device and operating-system version, whether the Sims 3 launcher opens, and which troubleshooting steps changed the behavior. For an unlisted code or an app that continues to fail, EA’s error-code guidance points to the EA Error Reporter.
EA’s Sims 3 support hub links to its game-specific help. Because support instructions and app labels can change, check EA Help for the current directions that match your platform and error.
