Sylveon’s English name is most plausibly a blend of sylph, a fairy-like spirit, and eon, the recurring ending in Eevee’s English evolution names. That is a well-supported interpretation, not a confirmed explanation from Pokémon’s creators. Sylveon is Pokémon No. 700 in the National Pokédex.
What does “Sylveon” likely mean?
The clearest proposed reading breaks the name into two parts: sylph and eon. A sylph is a spirit associated with air and, in fantasy, with fairy-like beings. The ending -eon echoes the names of Eevee’s other English evolutions, including Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon. Pokémon Database lists this as a possible explanation for the English name: Pokémon Database’s Sylveon entry.
Some references also propose a connection to sylvan, meaning wooded or forest-related, or to Silvanus, a Roman woodland deity. Those are additional possibilities, not established parts of the name’s origin. The available sources do not confirm which, if any, influenced the official naming decision.
Is that the official explanation?
No creator or official naming statement confirming the name’s meaning appears in the sources available here. The sylph-and-eon reading is therefore best described as a plausible reference explanation, rather than verified intent. Pokémon Database reported the English name announcement on February 14, 2013, but that date does not establish why the name was chosen: Pokémon Database’s announcement report.

Why is Sylveon called Nymphia in Japanese?
Sylveon’s Japanese name is Nymphia. Reference sources suggest it may draw on nymph, another kind of mythological spirit, but that interpretation is also tentative; it does not prove that the English name Sylveon was officially based on nymphs. Names also differ across other localizations: the French name is Nymphali, while the German name is Feelinara. The English wordplay should not be assumed to explain every version.
For the Japanese and other localized names, see Bulbapedia’s Sylveon reference.
