Check the display’s selected HDMI input and the HDMI signal path first; if the console remains on but no image appears after Sony’s troubleshooting steps, contact PlayStation Repairs.
What the white light means
Sony defines a solid white indicator as meaning, “The console is powered on.” It does not confirm that the HDMI cable, display, or video signal is working. A white light with a black screen or a “no signal” message is therefore a display-path problem to troubleshoot, not proof of a particular failed component. Sony’s indicator-light guidance describes the light states.
Check the HDMI connection and display input
Start with the checks that do not change console settings or erase data:
- Make sure the TV or monitor is on, then select the HDMI input the PS5 is connected to. If the display has several HDMI ports, verify the port number rather than relying on the input name alone.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both the console and the display.
- Try another HDMI port on the display. If you have access to a known-good cable, try it as well. Test with another cable before buying one; Sony recommends trying a different cable as a diagnostic check.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the screen. Temporarily remove an AV receiver, sound bar, HDMI switch, capture device, or other intermediary from the signal path.
Sony recommends the HDMI 2.1 cable supplied with the PS5 for its high-performance features, while noting that older HDMI cables can also be used. A particular third-party brand is not required. Sony’s no-picture troubleshooting steps cover cable, input, and connection checks.

Check display compatibility, settings, and power
Update the display and check its settings
Check whether a firmware update is available for your TV or monitor, and consult its manual for settings needed to accept the signal from a PS5. Sony says the PS5 supports 4K at 120 Hz with a compatible display; that capability does not mean every screen or HDMI connection supports that mode. Sony’s 4K resolution guide explains the display requirement.
Perform a complete power cycle
- Turn off the TV or monitor and the PS5 completely.
- Unplug the power cables from both devices and wait 20 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cables, turn on the display, then turn on the PS5.
This is Sony’s recommended full power-cycle procedure for a powered-on console and screen with no image. Sony’s support steps include the 20-minute wait.

- Press and hold the power button. Release it after you hear the second beep.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 using a USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller.

Check whether the light is actually blinking or stuck blue
A steady white light is different from a persistent blinking white light or a blue light that never transitions to steady white. Sony identifies those latter patterns as a frozen-console error state. If that is what you see, unplug the console for three minutes and restart it. If the problem persists, Sony’s guidance includes reinstalling system software from Safe Mode. Sony’s indicator-light troubleshooting covers these error states.
Do not use a reset as an early display fix
Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data, according to Sony. They are not low-risk first steps for a screen that has no picture. Avoid selecting either option unless you understand the data-loss consequence and have decided to proceed. Sony’s Safe Mode options guide identifies the reset options and their effects.

When to contact PlayStation Repairs
If the light is steady white but the display still shows no picture after checking the input, cable, ports, direct connection, display settings, power cycle, and Safe Mode video options, use PlayStation Repairs. A white light by itself does not establish that the HDMI port, cable, GPU, or motherboard has failed, so avoid treating any one component as the diagnosis without further testing.
