Nintendo has not publicly confirmed why Waluigi is absent from the mainline Super Mario platform games. Its official character pages instead show a clear pattern: Waluigi is presented chiefly as a rival and competitor in sports, party, kart-racing, and other spin-off games. That pattern may help explain where Nintendo has used him, but it is not an official explanation for why he has not joined a mainline adventure.
What Nintendo has confirmed—and what it has not
Nintendo’s official Super Mario character hub and its feature “Welcome to the Wah-nderful World of Waluigi” describe Waluigi and list selected games, but neither gives a reason for his absence from mainline platform games. The distinction matters: a pattern in the games Nintendo highlights is evidence of how the character has been used, not proof of a development decision or its motive.
The hub is a selection of character information and games, not an exhaustive appearance database. Its entries show Waluigi in spin-offs, while entries for several other characters include mainline platform games. That contrast supports the observation that his role is concentrated elsewhere; it does not establish that he has never appeared in any other context, or explain why Nintendo has not put him in a mainline platform adventure.
Why Waluigi fits naturally in spin-offs
Nintendo calls Waluigi “Wario’s pal and accomplice” and “the self-proclaimed rival of Luigi.” The profile also says his long arms and legs help keep him competitive in sports. That description gives him an immediately usable role in games built around rivalry, teams, and competition without requiring a central place in a platform-game story.

Nintendo says Waluigi first appeared in Mario Tennis. Its feature and character hub highlight later appearances in titles including Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Party, Mario Golf: Super Rush, Mario Strikers: Battle League, and Mario Party Superstars. These examples make his established spin-off niche visible, but Nintendo does not say that this niche is the reason he has not appeared in a mainline game.
Why the Smash Bros. explanation is different
Waluigi’s absence as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is often discussed alongside his absence from mainline Mario games, but those are separate decisions in separate series. In a 2018 interview reported by Nintendo Life, then Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé addressed fan requests and said of the Smash roster, “And in the end it’s his decision to make.” The “his” referred to Smash director Masahiro Sakurai.

That comment concerns who gets included in Smash; it does not explain Nintendo’s choices for mainline Mario games. It should not be treated as evidence that Sakurai decides Waluigi’s role in the platform series.

Without a direct explanation from Nintendo, claims that Waluigi’s creator, ownership, popularity, or story status prevents his inclusion are theories, not confirmed reasons. The available official descriptions establish his debut, characterization, and selected appearances—not a hidden rule or obstacle keeping him out of mainline games.
