When an Asus ROG Ally is not connecting to a TV or monitor, the fault is usually somewhere in the display chain: the selected HDMI input, cable, USB-C dock or adapter, Windows projection mode, drivers or firmware, or the Ally’s USB-C hardware. Check those causes in order, starting with the quickest isolation tests.

The ROG Ally normally sends video through its USB-C port to a USB-C-to-HDMI dock or adapter. A charging-capable dock is useful when the Ally must remain powered during gaming, but any dock must support video output rather than USB-C charging alone.

The most reliable fix is to change one part at a time: verify the display input, reseat the connections, test another HDMI cable and display, bypass or replace the dock, reset Windows display output, update ASUS software, and then use the model-specific hardware reset procedure.

Key takeaways

  • The ROG Ally normally connects to a TV or monitor through its USB-C port and a USB-C-to-HDMI dock or adapter.
  • A wrong TV input, loose HDMI connection, incompatible dock, insufficient dock power, or damaged cable can all produce a no-signal result.
  • Windows projection controls and the Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B display reset can restore an external screen without replacing hardware.
  • Windows, ASUS drivers, BIOS, and dock firmware should be current before deeper hardware diagnosis.
  • If a known-good cable, display, and compatible dock all fail after an EC/RTC reset, ASUS support is the appropriate next step.

How do you check the ROG Ally TV or monitor connection?

Start with the physical display chain because the fastest faults to eliminate are the TV input, HDMI cable, dock, and USB-C connection.

  1. Turn on the TV or monitor. Use the display remote or controls to select the exact HDMI input connected to the dock or adapter. HDMI 1, HDMI 2, and HDMI 3 are separate inputs.
  2. Reseat every connection. Unplug and reconnect the USB-C connector at the Ally, the HDMI connector at the dock or adapter, and the HDMI connector at the TV or monitor. Check for visibly bent, cracked, loose, or damaged connectors.
  3. Try another HDMI cable. If the display is 4K, the official ROG connection guide recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. That recommendation concerns cable capability for 4K; it does not prove that every no-signal problem is caused by the cable.
  4. Test the TV or monitor with another device. Connect a laptop, console, or other known-working HDMI source to the same input. This helps distinguish a display-input problem from an Ally-side problem.

ASUS’s official external-display troubleshooting sequence recommends checking the display, input, connections, and alternate cables or devices before escalating.

Why can the USB-C dock stop the ROG Ally from displaying?

A USB-C dock can fail, lack sufficient power, or lack the correct display-output path, so a dock is not simply a passive cable replacement.

Remove unnecessary peripherals from the dock and test the simplest possible chain: Ally USB-C port, dock or adapter, one HDMI cable, and one display. If possible, test another compatible dock or adapter. A direct USB-C display connection working while the dock fails makes the dock or its power supply the leading suspect; a second dock failing in the same way points attention back toward the Ally, cable, display, or Windows.

ASUS’s USB Type-C troubleshooting guidance specifically identifies a faulty or underpowered USB-C dock as a possible cause. ASUS’s ROG Ally TV and monitor connection guide names the ROG 65W Gaming Charger Dock as an example of a USB-C-to-HDMI dock that can charge the Ally while displaying video.

Accessory choice Display requirement Power consideration Best troubleshooting use
USB-C-to-HDMI adapter Must explicitly support USB-C video output to HDMI May not charge the Ally while displaying Simple chain with fewer failure points
Powered USB-C HDMI dock Must support video output, not charging only Can power the Ally during play if power delivery is supported Useful for gaming with charging and peripherals
Complex multi-adapter chain Every adapter must support the required video standard Power limits can become harder to isolate Least useful while diagnosing a no-signal fault

Verify the exact ROG Ally generation and the accessory manufacturer’s specifications before buying. ASUS’s published material does not provide a complete third-party compatibility matrix, so compatibility should not be assumed from a generic USB-C label.

Why does Windows show no picture even when the HDMI connection is secure?

Windows may detect the physical connection but use a projection mode or display state that does not show the expected image on the TV or monitor.

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset display-related settings. The screen may flicker or briefly go blank while Windows refreshes the graphics output.

Then open Windows projection controls with Windows + P and try the available modes, including Duplicate, Extend, and the external-display-only option. Check Windows display settings to confirm whether the TV or monitor appears and whether the display arrangement matches the mode you selected.

Do not treat the Ally screen remaining on as proof that HDMI has failed. Duplicate mode can keep both screens active, and Extend mode can place windows on the second display without making the Ally screen black. The official ROG guide states: “When you plug the Ally into the TV, the screen will go black for a moment as it detects the new display, after which you should see the Ally’s display appear on your TV or monitor.” — ROG official connection guide

Which updates can fix ROG Ally HDMI or external-display problems?

Install pending Windows updates and current ASUS drivers, BIOS, and relevant firmware before concluding that the USB-C hardware has failed.

Check the ROG Ally 2023 support downloads for the correct model and current packages. Model identification matters because the ROG Ally generation and package requirements can differ.

For the 2023 ROG Ally, ASUS’s support page lists BIOS version 342 dated March 7, 2025. That dated listing is a model-specific reference, not a guarantee that version 342 is the newest BIOS when you check. Use ASUS’s live support page to verify the current package before installing.

Never turn the Ally off or interrupt power during a BIOS update. ASUS warns that interrupting the process can prevent the device from turning on correctly. Keep the Ally connected to reliable power and follow the exact ASUS update instructions.

How do you reset the ROG Ally after the basic display checks fail?

If the external display recently stopped working after cables, docks, or software changes, perform the ASUS-recommended EC/RTC reset or hard reset for the specific Ally model.

The EC/RTC procedure restores relevant low-level hardware state and is different from merely changing Windows projection settings. Follow the model-specific instructions in ASUS support documentation, and back up important work before performing a reset. Do not improvise a button sequence from a different ROG Ally generation.

After the reset, repeat the test with one known-good HDMI cable, one known-good display input, and one compatible dock or adapter. Keeping the setup minimal makes the result easier to interpret.

When should you contact ASUS support?

Contact ASUS when a known-good cable, display, and compatible dock produce the same result after Windows, driver, BIOS, firmware, and reset checks.

Support is also appropriate when the Ally’s USB-C port is physically damaged or loose, or when Windows cannot recognize any USB-C display device despite the isolation tests. At that point, buying more random adapters is less useful than model-specific diagnosis.

Before contacting ASUS, record the exact Ally model, dock or adapter model, display model, HDMI input used, cables tested, Windows projection modes tried, update status, and whether another source device works on the same display input. That information helps support identify whether the failure follows the Ally, dock, cable, or display.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect my ROG Ally to a TV or monitor?

The ROG Ally normally connects to a TV or monitor through its USB-C port and a USB-C-to-HDMI dock or adapter. Connect HDMI from the dock to the display, select the matching HDMI input, and use a charging-capable dock if the Ally must be powered during play.

Why does my ROG Ally monitor say no signal?

A ROG Ally monitor saying “no signal” can be caused by the wrong HDMI input, a loose or damaged cable, a faulty or underpowered dock, Windows projection settings, outdated drivers or firmware, or a USB-C hardware problem. Test each part with known-good replacements to isolate the cause.

What should I do if my ROG Ally HDMI connection is detected but shows no picture?

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset display-related settings, then press Windows + P and try Duplicate, Extend, or external-display-only mode. Windows may briefly blank the Ally screen while it detects the connected display.

When should I contact ASUS about a ROG Ally display problem?

Contact ASUS when a known-good cable, display, and compatible dock all fail after Windows, ASUS driver, BIOS, firmware, and model-specific EC/RTC reset checks. Contact ASUS sooner if the USB-C port is loose or physically damaged.

The Bottom Line

ROG Ally not connecting to TV or monitor problems usually require isolating the display chain: select the correct HDMI input, reseat or replace the cable, test another display or dock, reset Windows projection, update ASUS software and firmware, and then perform the model-specific EC/RTC reset. Persistent failure with known-good equipment warrants ASUS support.
