If your original Joy-Con won’t charge, first check that it is attached to a Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED that is connected to its AC adapter and either powered on or in Sleep Mode. For other setups, the charging method matters: Switch Lite cannot charge Joy-Con directly, and the regular Joy-Con Grip does not charge them. The steps below help you check the charging indicator and narrow down whether the issue is the power adapter, console, grip, or controller.
Check the console’s charging conditions and status
Nintendo says original Joy-Con charge while attached only when the Switch or Switch OLED is connected to its AC adapter and powered on or in Sleep Mode. Connecting the controllers to an unplugged console is not enough.
- Attach the Joy-Con to the console.
- Connect the console to its Nintendo Switch AC Adapter, model HAC-002.
- Leave the console powered on or in Sleep Mode.
- Open the HOME Menu and select Controllers. Nintendo says this screen shows approximate battery charge for the console and connected controllers, as well as an icon indicating whether they are charging. Nintendo’s Joy-Con charging guidance
Nintendo gives approximately 3.5 hours as the time to fully charge original Joy-Con. That is its approximate guidance, not a guaranteed charging time for every battery or situation. Nintendo Support
Check your charging accessory
The included Joy-Con Grip does not charge
The standard Joy-Con Grip, model HAC-011, holds the two controllers in a traditional-style layout but does not charge them. The separately sold Joy-Con Charging Grip, model HAC-012, can charge them when connected to supported power. Nintendo also lists a Joy-Con Charging Stand as another charging option. Switch Lite needs a charging accessory
Switch Lite cannot charge Joy-Con directly. To charge Joy-Con with a Switch Lite setup, use a compatible accessory such as the HAC-012 Charging Grip or a Joy-Con Charging Stand. Nintendo Support
Test the adapter, grip, console, and Joy-Con
If the charging indicator does not appear, or the battery does not increase, compare charging methods to isolate the likely fault.

- Inspect the adapter and cable. Check the HAC-002 adapter and cable for cuts, kinks, or fraying. If available, try another Nintendo Switch AC Adapter.
- Reset the power connection. For grip troubleshooting, Nintendo advises unplugging the adapter from both the grip and the wall outlet for at least 30 seconds, then reconnecting it. Nintendo’s grip troubleshooting
- Try a compatible Charging Grip. If the Joy-Con charge on the grip but not while attached to the console under the required conditions, Nintendo says the console may need service.
- Compare the results. If the Joy-Con charge on the console but not on a correctly connected Charging Grip, Nintendo’s guidance points to a grip fault and replacement.
