Jaylen Brown’s early training-camp praise does not make Tyrese Maxey the 76ers’ official captain or settle every question about the team’s hierarchy. It does offer a telling endorsement from a major new teammate: Brown says Maxey is already communicating, leading vocally and making newcomers feel welcome. Combined with Maxey’s All-Star and All-NBA standing, that is a persuasive case for him as Philadelphia’s primary voice and offensive engine.
What Jaylen Brown said about Maxey
After joining Philadelphia in a July 6, 2026 trade, Brown entered camp as a new teammate with a fresh view of how the 76ers operate. In a report by The Sixer Sense, Brown described Maxey this way: “Tyrese has been a great communicator. He’s been leading with his voice early on.” Brown added: “He’s been the most vocal. He’s been the one making sure everybody is accommodated.”
Chris Hine’s October 1, 2026, report in The Philadelphia Inquirer offered a concrete example of that welcome. Brown said, “He’s been a great host,” and added, “He’s trying to make me feel comfortable, even if I don’t need it, but I appreciate it.” These are camp observations about communication and helping a teammate adjust—not a formal declaration of captaincy, nor proof of how the room will function over a full season.
Why that praise matters in Philadelphia
Brown is not simply repeating a familiar teammate’s compliment. He arrived from Boston as a prominent addition, and his account describes conduct visible to a newcomer: Maxey is speaking up and attending to teammates. That gives the praise particular relevance as Philadelphia integrates major roster additions. The 76ers’ July 6 announcement places Brown in that new team context.

Welcoming a star does not automatically make Maxey the sole voice in the locker room. It does show the kind of everyday leadership that can make a roster cohere: a player with stature taking responsibility for communication and inclusion, rather than leaving that work to coaches or veterans alone. Brown’s comments are useful evidence of that role precisely because he is new to the group.
Maxey has the résumé to match the leadership case
The 76ers’ official Maxey profile lists him as a 2026 NBA All-Star starter and records his first All-NBA selection for the 2025–26 season. The profile also documents earlier All-Star recognition and his Most Improved Player award. Those honors make the case for Maxey more substantial than a claim that he is merely a promising young player.

The Sixer Sense reported Maxey’s 2025–26 averages as 28.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game. That line suggests both primary scoring responsibility and meaningful playmaking, though the figures here are attributed to that publication. The official profile provides historical context, not a substitute for that current-season line: it lists 26.3 points and 6.1 assists per game for 2024–25, and notes 25.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game in 2023–24, when he won Most Improved Player.

The phrase can describe several different jobs, and the evidence does not establish that Maxey owns every one of them. A practical way to assess the claim is to separate the roles:

- Locker-room voice: Brown’s camp comments strongly support Maxey as an early communicator and a player who is helping teammates settle in.
- Offensive engine: The Sixer Sense’s reported scoring and assist averages support a central offensive role, but they do not by themselves prove who will have priority in every late-game decision.
- Current stature: The official profile’s 2026 All-Star starter and first All-NBA selection establish that Maxey has already reached elite recognition.
- Public identity and tenure: Maxey’s place in Philadelphia’s identity matters, but Brown’s praise does not settle how fans, the organization or other stars define the franchise’s public face.
So the strongest version of the argument is not that Brown has handed Maxey authority, or that no other Sixer matters. It is that Maxey has combined high-level production and major honors with behavior that a new star noticed immediately. That combination makes him a credible choice to lead the team publicly and carry its offense. Whether he is the floor general and unquestioned primary option throughout the season remains a question for the team’s play and results to answer.
