Players keep targeting Gules because surviving the quest The Jaunt can put him on guard duty at Semine, where a walkthrough describes a nighttime route to a chest key and armor. It is a post-quest opportunity, not a random robbery event.
Why Gules is at Semine after The Jaunt
Gules is a noble who leads a bandit group. During The Jaunt, he may survive and be captured alongside the cousins tied to the missing-cart plot. A character reference says Jan Semine takes him on as a town guard because, as a noble, he cannot be hanged. That outcome explains why players can encounter him later at Semine. The Gules character reference and Gameranx’s armor walkthrough describe this broad sequence; neither is official developer documentation.

How the reported armor-stealing route works
Gameranx’s guide places Gules in an upstairs sleeping area at Semine after The Jaunt. It recommends waiting until night, sneaking in while he sleeps, pickpocketing his key, then using it on a chest near the entrance to the interior room.
- Save before attempting the theft; the guide warns that getting caught can result in a fine.
- Wait until night and quietly approach Gules’s upstairs sleeping area.
- Pickpocket him for the key while he sleeps.
- Use the key on the nearby chest described by the guide.
This is a walkthrough-reported method, not independently verified testing. The cited guide does not establish the chest’s exact contents item by item, a patch version, or that the route works in every quest state. Treat the armor opportunity and room directions as conditional rather than guaranteed.

What you can miss by treating Gules only as a target
Leaving Gules alive also connects to later content. In the Canker quest, he has taken up guard duties and asks Henry to deal with remaining bandits. The walkthrough names a mace as a required quest item and reports an 85 Groschen reward, with the option to keep the mace. See the Canker quest reference and Canker walkthrough for those task details.
A Gamer Guides character entry also lists Gules as a later trainer: Apprentice Swordsmanship, Thievery, and Stealth for 500 Groschen each, and Basics Unarmed for 100 Groschen. These are listed training costs, not evidence that every player will encounter the same availability in every quest state.
