A Laravel route usually returns 404 for one of four reasons: the request does not match the route’s HTTP method or URI, the route file was never loaded, an old route cache is still active, or the web server is not forwarding the request to Laravel’s front controller. Start with php artisan route:list, compare the incoming request exactly with the registered route, clear stale route cache, and verify that the server’s document root is the application’s public directory with unmatched requests sent to public/index.php.

The fastest way to choose the right fix is to identify which layer generated the 404. A server-branded error page points to Nginx or Apache; Laravel’s own error response means the request reached the framework but no route matched.

Do not change routes at random until you know whether Laravel saw the request. Open the failing URL and inspect its response body, headers, and the web-server logs. Compare the page with a request that you know reaches the application.

This distinction matters because a route definition cannot repair a web server that never forwards the request, and a rewrite change cannot make a missing or mismatched Laravel route exist. Check the failing request in a browser, form submission, API client, or command-line client, then use the result to select the troubleshooting branch below.

Confirm that Laravel registered the route
The authoritative first check is Laravel’s route list. From the application directory, run:
php artisan route:listFind the route you expect and read its URI, HTTP method, middleware, and action. If you need middleware details in the same output, run:
php artisan route:list -vIf the route is absent, Laravel did not register it in the running application. Do not proceed by guessing at URLs: determine why the definition is not being loaded. If the route is present, copy the method and URI from the list and compare them character for character with the request that produced the 404.
When the route is missing from the list
- Check that the definition is in the route file your application actually loads, normally
routes/web.phpfor browser routes. - Check any other route file used by the application and the bootstrap configuration that wires that file into Laravel.
- Make sure the deployed release contains the edited file. A local route change has no effect if the web server is pointing at another release directory.
- Clear a potentially stale route cache, then run
route:listagain. - Confirm that you are invoking Artisan from the intended project directory and that the PHP process serving web requests uses that same application.
A route that appears in your working copy but not in route:list is a registration or deployment problem, not a browser-cache problem.
Match the HTTP method and URI exactly
Laravel matches an incoming request against both its HTTP method and its URI. A route declared with Route::get('/reports', ...) does not satisfy a POST request to /reports. Read the method shown by route:list, then inspect what the client actually sends.
Verify the method used by each client
- For a browser address-bar request, the method is normally
GET. - For an HTML form, inspect the form’s
methodattribute and the generated action URL. - For JavaScript
fetchor another API client, inspect the explicit method and the final URL after any variable substitution. - For a command-line request, check the flags that select
GET,POST, or another verb and confirm that redirects have not changed the request you are testing.
Do not infer the method from the page you intended to open. The request captured by the browser’s network panel or server log is the one Laravel must match.
Check the URI, prefixes, and spelling
Compare the complete path with the route list. Look for a missing prefix, an extra segment, a spelling or capitalization difference, and a parameter that was omitted or placed in the wrong position. A route under a group prefix is not the same URI as the unprefixed route you may have typed manually. Likewise, /reports and /reports/ can behave differently depending on the request and the server configuration, so test the exact form shown in your route list and normalize links and redirects consistently.

Also verify the host and path are the ones served by the intended application. A correct URI sent to a different virtual host, staging release, or subdirectory can produce a valid 404 from an entirely different Laravel instance.
Use a minimal request to remove client-side variables
When a form or front-end application is involved, send a minimal request directly to the URL using the method listed by Laravel. If that request works, the route is registered and the problem is in the client-generated method or URI. If it still returns Laravel’s 404, continue with route constraints, route caching, and route-file loading.
Check route files and the application bootstrap
Laravel’s directory structure places route definitions under the routes directory. Browser routes normally live in routes/web.php, while an application may load additional route files through its bootstrap configuration. The request entry point is public/index.php; the web server must send requests there for Laravel to process them.

- Open the route file containing the definition and confirm the path and method are exactly what you intend.
- Run
php artisan route:listfrom the same application directory used by the deployment. - If the route is not listed, inspect the application’s bootstrap or route-registration configuration for the file that should load it.
- Check that the deployed code includes the file and that the active release path is the one you edited.
- After making a change, clear route cache if the application may be using cached routes, then run
route:listagain.
Do not treat a successful PHP syntax check as proof that a route is active. A syntactically valid route in an unconfigured file is invisible to the router.
Clear and rebuild the route cache deliberately
Cached routes can make a newly added or changed route appear to be ignored. Remove the cached route definitions with:
php artisan route:clearRun php artisan route:list after clearing the cache. If the route now appears and the request succeeds, the 404 was caused by stale cached routes.

php artisan route:cacheLaravel’s route cache is a deployment artifact, not a place to edit route definitions. The safe sequence is to deploy the intended code, clear or replace the old cache, verify the route list, and then create a fresh cache when your deployment process calls for it. If different hosts or release directories are involved, execute these commands against the application instance that actually handles the failing request.
Make sure the web server serves public
Laravel’s public directory contains index.php, the entry point for requests entering the application. The virtual host or site configuration must use that directory as the document root, not the project root. Serving the project root can expose the wrong files and, more importantly for routing, prevent the intended front-controller setup from being used.
Nginx: send non-files to the front controller
The documented front-controller pattern for Nginx is:
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$query_string;Use it in the server configuration whose root is the Laravel application’s public directory. The configuration must also pass /index.php to the PHP-FPM service used by that application. The important behavior is that an existing static file can be served directly, while a dynamic URI falls through to index.php with its query string preserved.
After changing the site configuration, reload Nginx and verify that PHP-FPM is serving the expected application. A server-branded 404 on every deep link, while the home page or static files work, strongly suggests that the fallback is missing or the active virtual host is not the one you edited.
Apache: preserve the public rewrite setup
For Apache, keep the rewrite configuration supplied in the application’s public directory and ensure the virtual host permits it. Apache must be allowed to apply the public-directory rewrite rules so requests for application URLs are forwarded to public/index.php. If overrides are disabled or the virtual host points above public, deep links can return an Apache 404 before Laravel runs.
After changing Apache’s virtual-host or directory configuration, reload the service, test the same URL again, and inspect the Apache error log if the response remains server-generated.

Use the symptom pattern to choose the next check
The home page works, but every deep link is a 404
Prioritize the web-server layer. A root page can work because it maps to an actual file or a special server rule, while other URLs need the front-controller fallback. Confirm that the document root is public, that Nginx uses the try_files fallback or Apache applies the public rewrite configuration, and that the request reaches the PHP-FPM process for the intended release.

The route definition is probably present, but the production web-server path differs from the development server. Compare the response branding first. If the production page is branded by Nginx or Apache, fix the document root, rewrite, PHP-FPM, and active-host configuration rather than changing the Laravel route.
The route appears in route:list, but Laravel returns 404
Check the incoming method and complete URI next. Then inspect any route grouping or prefix that changes the final path, clear stale route cache, and verify that the request is reaching the same application whose route list you inspected. A listed route is evidence of registration, not evidence that every method, host, or path matches it.
Only one HTTP method fails
Compare the failing verb with the route declaration. For example, a browser test may send GET while a form submits POST. Add or change a route only when that method is genuinely part of the intended interface; do not hide an incorrectly generated request with a catch-all route.
The route works immediately after deployment, then starts returning 404
Check whether a deployment step recreated a stale route cache, switched the web server to another release directory, or left workers and PHP-FPM pointed at an old application. Run route:list in the active release, clear and intentionally rebuild route cache, and confirm that the web server and PHP-FPM configuration were reloaded.

Check the host, release, and PHP process in production
Deployment context can make a correct route look absent. Confirm all of the following for the failing hostname:
- The DNS name reaches the intended server and virtual host.
- The virtual host’s document root is the intended release’s
publicdirectory. - PHP-FPM is running the PHP application and code release you expect.
- The route file and bootstrap configuration are present in that release.
- Any Nginx or Apache configuration changes have been reloaded.
- Route cache was cleared or rebuilt for that release after the code change.
If you have multiple releases, compare the path shown in deployment configuration with the directory where you ran Artisan. Running route:list in a neighboring checkout proves nothing about the host serving the request.

Fallback routes: useful behavior, not a routing repair
Route::fallback(...) handles requests that match no other route. It is useful when you deliberately want a controlled catch-all response, such as a consistent application-level not-found page or a structured API error. It does not make an absent route exist, correct a wrong HTTP method, clear route cache, or repair a broken Nginx or Apache rewrite.
Use a fallback only after the intended routes and deployment path are correct. Otherwise it can mask a typo or deployment error by turning a diagnostic 404 into a response that looks intentional. Keep the fallback’s purpose explicit and verify that normal routes still appear in route:list.
A production-safe troubleshooting procedure
- Reproduce the exact request. Record the hostname, path, query string, HTTP method, response headers, response body, and time of the failure.
- Identify the 404 layer. Decide whether the response is branded by Nginx or Apache or generated by Laravel.
- Inspect the active application. From the deployed project directory, run
php artisan route:list, adding-vwhen middleware details help. - Compare method and URI. Match the client’s actual request with the route-list entry, including prefixes and path spelling.
- Verify registration. If the route is missing, check the loaded route file, bootstrap configuration, deployed release, and host selection.
- Reset route cache. Run
php artisan route:clear; rerun the route list and retest. - Validate the front controller. Confirm the document root is
public, dynamic requests fall through topublic/index.php, and PHP-FPM serves the same application. - Reload the deployment. Reload the changed Nginx or Apache configuration and verify the intended host and release directory.
- Rebuild cache intentionally. If production uses cached routes, run
php artisan route:cacheonly after the correct routes are deployed and verified. - Add a fallback only by design. Use
Route::fallbackfor controlled unmatched-request behavior, never as a substitute for the preceding checks.
Common fixes that do not solve the real problem
Changing the route when the server generated the 404
If the response is an Nginx or Apache page, Laravel has not evaluated the route. Editing controllers, middleware, or route syntax cannot change that response until the server forwards the request to the front controller.
Clearing browser or application data instead of route cache
A browser refresh does not remove Laravel’s cached route definitions. Use php artisan route:clear in the active application, then verify with route:list.
Testing a different application than the one serving traffic
It is possible to run Artisan in one directory while the virtual host and PHP-FPM use another. Always tie the route-list check to the release and host that produced the 404.
Adding a catch-all before finding the typo
A fallback can make the page look more polished while hiding an incorrect URI or missing route file. First establish that intended routes are registered and reachable; then add fallback behavior for a deliberate product requirement.
What a successful diagnosis looks like
You have reached the correct fix when the evidence lines up: the failing request’s method and URI correspond to an entry in route:list; the route file is loaded in the active release; route cache reflects the current code; the virtual host serves public; and a dynamic request is forwarded to public/index.php. At that point Laravel can match the request normally, while unmatched requests can be handled intentionally with the application’s standard 404 behavior or a deliberately configured fallback.
