Is Linux using all your memory, and should you worry when the free figure is low? Usually, no. Linux deliberately fills otherwise idle RAM with filesystem page cache, kernel buffers and reclaimable slab objects. That reduces the narrow MemFree number while keeping data close at hand and leaving memory the kernel can reclaim when an application needs it.

The useful first question is not “How much is free?” but “How much is available without swapping?” On a current Linux system, MemAvailable is the best starting indicator. Low MemFree with healthy available memory and no slowdown is normal; low available memory combined with swap activity, allocation failures or visible stalls deserves investigation.

The free command reads memory counters from /proc/meminfo. Its free column represents RAM that is completely unused at that instant. It does not include memory holding data that can be discarded or reclaimed quickly. Consequently, a machine can have a small free value and still have substantial capacity for a new game, application or background task.
| Field | What it represents | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
free / MemFree |
Completely unused physical RAM. | A narrow measure. A low value alone is not evidence of a leak. |
buffers |
Kernel buffer memory used for certain block-device and filesystem bookkeeping tasks. | Generally reclaimable when memory is needed. |
cache |
Filesystem page cache plus reclaimable kernel slab categories as presented by free. |
Often discarded or reused under pressure, so it is not equivalent to permanently allocated application RAM. |
buff/cache |
The displayed sum of buffers and cache. | Shows RAM being used productively by the kernel rather than sitting idle. |
available / MemAvailable |
An estimate of RAM that can be given to new applications without swapping, while retaining enough cache for healthy operation. | The most useful first headroom indicator on modern Linux. |
swap |
Storage-backed virtual memory currently allocated or available for paging. | Some use is not automatically an emergency; active, sustained swapping alongside sluggishness is a warning sign. |
Depending on the version of the free utility, the displayed used value may be derived by subtracting buffers and cache from total memory or by subtracting available memory from total. Those formulas answer different questions, so compare the field definitions rather than relying on the label alone. A dashboard that calls everything not in MemFree “used” can make normal cache look like an application consuming all RAM.

Why Linux fills idle RAM
Filesystem page cache
Reading a file normally requires storage I/O. Linux keeps recently read file data in the page cache so a second read can be served from RAM. Game launchers, shader caches, shared libraries, textures and configuration files all benefit from this behavior. The cache is not a reservation that applications can never use: when a process requests memory and no clean free pages remain, the kernel can evict file-backed pages and reuse those frames.
Kernel buffers
Buffers hold kernel-managed data associated with block devices and filesystems. Their exact size changes with workload and kernel behavior. They are part of the memory Linux uses to make storage operations efficient, not a hidden user process.
Reclaimable slab objects
The slab allocator stores kernel objects such as directory entries and inode metadata. Some slab objects are reclaimable, while others are in active use or cannot be discarded immediately. That distinction matters: counting every slab byte as instantly free overstates the headroom, while counting all of it as permanently used understates what the kernel can recover.
Anonymous memory is different
Process heaps, stacks and many runtime allocations are anonymous memory: they are not simply clean copies of files that can be dropped. Anonymous pages may be kept in RAM or moved to swap when pressure rises. When diagnosing a genuinely large consumer, distinguish anonymous memory from file-backed cache instead of treating their totals as interchangeable.
Why MemAvailable is the better first signal
Linux defines MemAvailable as an estimate of how much memory can be used to start new applications without swapping. The calculation combines MemFree, reclaimable slab (SReclaimable), file-backed LRU pages and each memory zone’s low-watermark reserves. It deliberately keeps enough page cache for the system to function well and discounts reclaimable slab that is technically marked reclaimable but occupied by objects still in use.

This is why adding MemFree and every cache-looking field yourself is unreliable. Some pages can be reclaimed immediately; some require write-back; some slab objects are pinned by active kernel users. The kernel’s estimate incorporates those limits and is more useful than a simplistic “total minus free” calculation.

Read a snapshot without misreading it
Start with a human-readable summary
- Open a terminal.
- Run
free -h. The-hoption formats quantities with binary units that are easier to scan. - Record
total,available,buff/cache, andswapused. Do not make a diagnosis fromfreealone.
A single snapshot is a state, not a trend. Repeat the command during the slowdown or sample it periodically if you need to see whether available memory is steadily falling.
Inspect the underlying counters
For more detail, read the kernel’s procfs interface:
grep -E '^(MemTotal|MemFree|MemAvailable|Buffers|Cached|SReclaimable|SwapTotal|SwapFree|SwapCached):' /proc/meminfo
The values in /proc/meminfo are normally reported in kibibytes. This view lets you separate page cache, reclaimable slab and swap counters instead of relying on a tool’s presentation choices.

Check whether pressure is visible
Low MemFree is generally benign when MemAvailable remains healthy and the desktop or game remains responsive. Investigate when several symptoms line up:
- Available memory stays low or keeps declining during the workload.
- Swap activity is sustained, rather than a small historical amount sitting unused.
- Allocations fail or the kernel reports out-of-memory events.
- Responsiveness degrades: long pauses, disk thrashing, input lag or applications being terminated.
Swap “used” by itself does not prove current pressure. A page can have been moved to swap earlier and remain there while plenty of RAM is available. The combination of active paging and user-visible stalls is more informative than the swap total in isolation.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
1. Establish the baseline
Run free -h before launching the workload and again while it is running. Note total, available, buff/cache and swap used. If available memory is comfortably above zero and the system is responsive, a low free value is probably ordinary cache use.
2. Break down the available estimate
Use the /proc/meminfo command above to compare MemAvailable with Cached and SReclaimable. A large cache or reclaimable slab is not automatically a problem; it explains where otherwise idle RAM went and may be released when required.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Correlate counters with symptoms
Observe the machine during the actual problem. If available memory falls while swap activity rises and applications pause, memory pressure is plausible. If the game remains smooth and only MemFree is small, changing kernel settings is unlikely to help.

4. Find large anonymous consumers
Use a process monitor to identify processes holding substantial private memory. A command-line overview can be a starting point:
ps -eo pid,comm,%mem,rss --sort=-rss | head
Resident set size is a useful clue, but shared libraries and mapped files can make per-process totals overlap. Treat the list as a way to find candidates, then examine the suspected application’s behavior and logs rather than blaming the cache.
5. Check for allocation failures or out-of-memory action
If the kernel or an application reports an allocation failure, capture the time, workload and memory counters. An out-of-memory event is a materially different finding from a low MemFree reading. It calls for identifying the process growth, unusual workload or imposed memory limit that exhausted practical headroom.
6. Do not drop caches routinely
Manual cache-dropping commands make the free number look larger temporarily but throw away data Linux kept to improve performance. The kernel already reclaims eligible cache under pressure. Repeating cache drops can increase storage reads and make game launches or level loads slower; use them only for a controlled diagnostic experiment with a clear reason.

Memory dashboards are not interchangeable. Before comparing a desktop widget, terminal utility and monitoring service, check four details: how it computes “used,” whether it exposes MemAvailable, whether it shows swap and pressure indicators, and whether it separates anonymous memory from file-backed cache.

Common misconceptions and failed fixes
“Linux is using 100% of my RAM”
Most RAM can be occupied by a mixture of applications, page cache, buffers and slab. Occupied does not mean unreclaimable. The relevant question is how much can be made available for a new allocation without harmful swapping.
“Low free RAM proves a memory leak”
A leak is progressive growth that does not fall when the workload ends or the allocation becomes unnecessary. A cache that grows while files are read and shrinks when pressure arrives is expected behavior. Compare available memory over time and identify a process with growing anonymous usage before labeling the behavior a leak.
Recommended Free Tools
“The cache should always be cleared before gaming”
Clearing cache discards useful file data. It may increase the free counter for a short period, but it also forces the next launch or level load to read from storage again. Normal kernel reclaim is the safer default.
“Any swap use means the system is out of RAM”
Swap can contain cold pages even after RAM pressure has eased. Look for ongoing paging and responsiveness problems, not merely a nonzero historical counter.
When low memory really matters to games
Games and their launchers can allocate large anonymous regions while also causing the kernel to cache executable files, assets and shader data. A low free figure during this activity is expected if available memory remains adequate. Problems become credible when a title causes available memory to collapse, the storage device stays busy with paging, frame delivery develops long stalls, or the operating system terminates a process.
Separate game performance issues from memory pressure. A shader compilation pause, CPU saturation, GPU memory exhaustion or storage latency can feel similar to RAM shortage. Use the memory counters and process list to establish that system RAM is the limiting resource before changing graphics settings or kernel parameters.

- Look at
MemAvailable, not justMemFree. - Confirm the workload is causing pressure. Check swap activity, allocation errors and visible stalls at the same time.
- Identify the consumer. Distinguish a growing anonymous process from reclaimable cache or slab.
- Account for versions. Verify the kernel and
free/procpsbehavior when comparing machines. - Change one thing at a time. Avoid routine cache drops and untested kernel tuning, which can reduce performance without creating real headroom.
Linux’s low free-RAM figure is usually a sign that the operating system is making use of idle resources, not that it has lost control of memory. Treat available memory and corroborating pressure symptoms as the decision points; reserve emergency action for evidence of sustained paging, failed allocations, out-of-memory events or measurable degradation.
