Microsoft’s Ubisoft-related block was a temporary safeguard on the Windows 11 version 24H2 feature upgrade—not a ban on Ubisoft games or a stop to ordinary Windows security updates. In November 2024, Microsoft withheld 24H2 from some PCs because players who installed it reported crashes, freezes, black screens, and unresponsive behavior in five specific games. The incident is historical; Microsoft’s current 24H2 release-health page no longer lists it as an active issue.
What update did Microsoft block?
Microsoft temporarily stopped offering Windows 11 version 24H2 to some affected PCs through the normal Windows Update channel. That is a feature update: a major Windows release. It is different from monthly quality updates, which deliver security and reliability fixes, and from patches for a game delivered through Ubisoft Connect, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
The safeguard was intended to keep the affected PCs from receiving 24H2 while Microsoft and Ubisoft addressed the compatibility problem. It did not disable the games, block every Windows update, or prevent a PC from continuing to run its existing Windows version. Microsoft describes safeguard holds as a way to keep devices with known compatibility issues from being offered a feature update: Microsoft’s safeguard-hold guidance.
Which Ubisoft games were affected?
The reported issue involved five named games, not every Ubisoft title. Microsoft’s reported list and symptoms are covered in Engadget’s coverage of Microsoft’s confirmation.

The December 2024 fixes reduced the problem for Outlaws and Avatar, while contemporary reporting still described the three Assassin’s Creed games as unresolved. That account is in PC Gamer’s December 2024 update. The hold could depend on a title, game version, or compatibility state, so there is no single confirmed lift date for all five games.
What happened when a PC already had 24H2?
Microsoft said some players experienced crashes, freezes, black screens, or games that stopped responding after upgrading to 24H2. These were reported problems with specific games on a particular Windows release; they do not establish that every copy of each game failed.

The complete technical cause was not publicly established in the available reporting. Coverage noted that Avatar and Star Wars Outlaws use Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine, while the affected Assassin’s Creed games use Anvil. That is context, not proof that either engine caused the compatibility failure.
How to tell whether Windows Update is withholding 24H2
On a PC affected by a safeguard, Windows Update may say the upgrade is on its way but is not currently ready for the device, and offer a Learn more link. The wording and details can vary by Windows edition, organizational management, update policies, and whether another hold applies. See Microsoft’s guidance on safeguard holds.

A missing 24H2 offer by itself does not prove that a Ubisoft game is the reason. A PC may have another compatibility hold, or update policies may affect what Windows Update displays.
What affected players should do
- Update the game through the launcher where it is installed. Check Ubisoft Connect, Steam, or Epic Games Store for an available game patch.
- Restart Windows after installing the game update.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- If Windows says the upgrade is not ready, open Learn more to review the hold information provided for the device.
- Wait for Windows Update to offer the feature upgrade normally rather than trying to force it through while the hold is active.
Removing a game does not guarantee that the offer will return immediately. Compatibility information can remain stale, or a different hold may apply.

Why you should not force-install 24H2 during a hold
For ordinary users, do not bypass an active safeguard with the Windows 11 Installation Assistant, Media Creation Tool, or another manual feature-update method. Microsoft advises against bypassing safeguards because doing so can expose a device to the known compatibility problem. In this incident, that could mean game crashes, freezes, black screens, or unresponsive behavior. Microsoft says opting out should be reserved for controlled IT testing environments: Safeguard holds and deployment guidance.
If the PC is managed by an organization, its update administrator should decide whether a controlled test or override is appropriate. If 24H2 is already installed, patch the affected game, install available Windows updates, and troubleshoot that game; the original hold is not a reason by itself to reinstall Windows.

Advanced check: inspect the 24H2 safeguard status
Administrators and advanced users can query the documented registry location from an elevated PowerShell session. Microsoft documents the path and values in its safeguard-hold instructions.

A missing key or value does not prove that the PC is compatible. Policies, stale compatibility information, or a different update channel can affect what appears.
What is the status now?
This was a November–December 2024 incident, not a newly announced 2026 block. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 24H2 resolved-issues page no longer lists the Ubisoft problem. That absence does not prove that every legacy installation is trouble-free, nor does it rule out a separate compatibility hold on a particular PC. The original event concerned Windows 11 24H2, not Windows 10 updates.
