Microsoft’s planned Xbox mobile game store missed its July 2024 launch target and still had not launched in the May 2025 reporting about the delay. Microsoft’s reported explanation was that uncertainty in its legal fight with Apple made launching risky—not that a court had found Apple solely responsible. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said in April 2026 that the idea was “not dead,” but Microsoft has not announced a new launch date.
What Microsoft planned to launch
At the Bloomberg Technology Summit on May 9, 2024, then Xbox president Sarah Bond described a browser-based mobile game store. It was to start with Microsoft games and digital in-game items, then potentially open to other publishers. Bloomberg reported that the plan included discounts on items associated with games such as Candy Crush Saga. (Bloomberg, May 9, 2024)
This was a proposed web storefront, not an announced native iOS app store. The central idea was to let players buy digital items outside a mobile game and use them in the game; it was not a promise that every Xbox game or publisher would be available at launch.
How the launch date slipped
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| May 9, 2024 | Bond announced the browser-based store concept and an initial July 2024 target. (Bloomberg; Windows Central) |
| Winter 2024 | Reporting said the launch target had shifted from July to winter. The store did not appear by that revised target. (Windows Central) |
| May 2025 | Microsoft’s amicus filing in the Epic Games v. Apple dispute was reported as describing legal uncertainty that could make a launch risky. The store remained unlaunched in that account. (The Verge) |
| April 22, 2026 | Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the idea was not dead; she did not give a replacement date. (Windows Central) |
| June 10, 2026 | An official Xbox strategy memo identified mobile as an area for rebuilding platform capabilities, but did not give a mobile-store schedule or establish this project’s status. (Xbox Wire) |
Why Microsoft says Apple-related uncertainty mattered
In May 2025 reporting on Microsoft’s amicus brief in the Epic Games v. Apple dispute, Microsoft’s concern was described as a risk tied to the injunction and its appeal. If Microsoft launched while the legal situation remained unsettled and Apple later obtained a stay, Microsoft could have to suspend the store while the appeal continued. (The Verge)

That is Microsoft’s reported litigation-risk rationale, not a court finding that Apple alone caused the delay. The detailed account of the filing cited here is reporting rather than a direct review of the court docket, so it does not establish every procedural detail. The explanation also should not be mistaken for proof that legal uncertainty was the only factor behind the missed launch.
Is the Xbox mobile store canceled?
There is no announced launch date, but the latest direct public status statement in the reviewed coverage is not a cancellation. Windows Central reported that on April 22, 2026, Sharma replied on social media: “mobile competition still matters and we believe the future of play should be more open,” adding that “the idea of an Xbox mobile store is not dead.” (Windows Central)

Windows Central had initially inferred the project might have been abandoned after test URLs stopped working, then updated its article with Sharma’s response. Her statement keeps the idea alive; it does not confirm that development is active, define what the store would include, or commit Microsoft to a release date. The June 2026 Xbox memo’s broad emphasis on rebuilding mobile capabilities likewise does not confirm the storefront’s schedule or status. (Xbox Wire)

- Established proposal: a browser-based storefront, initially for Microsoft games and digital items, with possible expansion to other publishers.
- Not established: a launch date, a final catalog, availability by country or platform, specific discounts, or whether the store is currently under active development.
- Not the same as: a native iPhone app marketplace or a confirmed way to buy every mobile game outside its app.
For now, the accurate answer to “Why hasn’t Microsoft launched its Xbox mobile store?” is that Microsoft’s reported concern about Apple-related legal uncertainty made a launch potentially vulnerable to suspension, while the company has offered no new date. The explanation is attributed to Microsoft’s position in litigation—not a settled finding of sole responsibility.
