Mike Flanagan’s new Carrie adaptation adds classmates recording Carrie White’s first-period humiliation on their phones. He said the change reflects his concern about “the normalization of cruelty” in an era when humiliating moments can be captured and shared.
What changes in Carrie’s period scene?
Carrie still does not understand what is happening when her first period begins in the school bathroom. In the trailer version described by GamesRadar+, the girls throw sanitary pads and tampons at her—and use their phones to record her distress.

The added recording is the key update: the humiliation is no longer confined to the bathroom or the people present. Flanagan said the scene’s contemporary context mattered because of “the normalization of cruelty that comes with that,” adding that the team felt it needed to be addressed.
Why did Flanagan add phone recording?
Flanagan framed the change around the possibility that cruelty can be documented and shared. Reflecting on his own high-school years, he said he could not imagine having to return to school knowing that “all of my torments, all of my mistakes, all of my growing moments” might be captured and shared indefinitely.

That is Flanagan’s stated creative rationale, not a measured claim about all teenagers or a finding that social media alone causes bullying. Stephen King also welcomed the adaptation’s use of social media. As Slashfilm reported, King said the new version “adds to it the destructive power of social media, which didn’t exist when I wrote the book.”
How does the scene fit into the wider reinvention?
Flanagan describes the project as a reinvention rather than a remake, with changes to the time period, the characters and the world around them. The series places Carrie in a present-day high school and takes up concerns including online bullying and school-violence fears. Coverage has described the setting as both 2025 and 2026, so “present day” is the clearest description without choosing between those differing reports.
The characters’ starting points also shift. Flanagan describes his Carrie as open, curious, kind and eager to experience the world. He portrays Margaret as fiercely loving her daughter but unsure how to protect her. That gives the story a different emotional baseline while leaving Carrie vulnerable to cruelty beyond the home.
The series also broadens the story to explore other gifted women, an element Flanagan says the novel hints at. His larger point is that Stephen King, writing half a century ago, could not have anticipated today’s tools of cruelty or the way bullying is treated as normalized in online spaces and public discourse.

How does the series relate to Stephen King’s novel?
King’s Carrie was published in 1974. The eight-episode series stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie and Samantha Sloyan as Margaret. Its phone-recording update is one difference from the novel’s original context; the changed characterization and expanded world are other parts of Flanagan’s reinvention. The new adaptation should be distinguished from the novel and from earlier screen versions.
The series is reported to arrive on Prime Video on October 7, 2026, with all eight episodes available at launch. Availability may vary by region; check the service’s listing for your location.
