Mojang has said it has no current plan to make Minecraft’s main game free-to-play: executive producer Ingela Garneij said the model does not fit the way the game was built. That is a design and monetization rationale—not proof that changing the price is technically impossible or permanently off the table.
What Mojang said about free-to-play
In an interview with IGN, Minecraft Vanilla executive producer Ingela Garneij explained that the free-to-play approach “doesn’t really work with the way we built it,” according to GameSpot’s March 24, 2025 report. She said Minecraft was built for a different purpose and described its model as: “It’s a purchase of the game and then that’s it.”

Game Director Agnes Larsson also described Minecraft’s paid status as part of the game’s values, GameSpot reported. The two representatives said there were no current plans to change the model at the time of the interview.

Does that mean Minecraft cannot become free-to-play?
No. “Doesn’t really work” describes Mojang’s stated fit between the game and a monetization model; it does not establish a technical barrier or legal restriction. Likewise, “no current plans” was a statement about the representatives’ position in the March 2025 interview, not a permanent promise that pricing or monetization will never change.
There is also no reported official Mojang statement adopting the interview comments as an unchangeable policy. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Mojang said the purchase-once approach better fits how it built the main game and its values.

What Minecraft is free-to-play today?
Minecraft’s official Help page lists current editions and directs players to the relevant platform stores. It separately calls Minecraft Classic “The original, free-to-play version of Minecraft!” Classic should not be confused with the full current editions: the official page identifies it separately and does not describe it as equivalent to them.
To find the edition for a device, use the official Minecraft editions and platform-store guide. The existence of free-to-play Minecraft Classic does not mean the main editions have changed to that model.
