NBA teams use City Edition uniforms to tell stories rooted in their cities, communities, and franchise histories—not just to wear a different color scheme. The designs give teams another way to express their identity and connect with fans, while the NBA and Nike describe them as a link between basketball, local culture, and community.
What does City Edition mean in the NBA?
City Edition is a specific NBA uniform category built around a story associated with an individual team. Its design may draw on local landmarks, community institutions, cultural traditions, or franchise history. The NBA describes the collection as a chance for teams to depart from their core branding when a different visual identity better expresses that story.
That makes “alternate identity” a useful way to describe the idea, but it is not a name for every alternate uniform category. City Edition has its own city- and team-centered purpose.
Why do NBA teams wear different jerseys?
To express a team-specific story
A City Edition uniform is intended to communicate something particular about the franchise and its home city. For example, the NBA’s look at the 2022–23 designs described Detroit’s connection to Saint Cecelia’s gym and Chicago’s use of the city’s Municipal Y symbol. Those references give fans context that a simple color swap would not.

To connect basketball with local culture
The NBA and Nike present the uniforms as a way to connect the court with community and culture. NBA Team Brand and Uniform Product Lead Nadia Roohparvar said the uniforms stand for things important to each city and can help educate younger fans about a team and its city. Nike’s Ross Klein described basketball as “a culture and a form of self-expression.” These are the organizations’ stated aims, not measured evidence of a particular effect on fans.
To give teams another way to engage fans
Nike works with teams on the designs; the NBA reported that work on the 2022–23 City Edition collection began in July 2020. Nike Global Product Director Jesse Alvarez said teams know their fan bases and listen to fans as they develop designs through the lens of each team’s stories. The intended result is another expression of team identity for current and future fans.

How do City Edition uniforms differ from core uniforms?
Core uniforms primarily express a team’s established brand. City Edition designs put more emphasis on a team’s connection to its city, community, or history, and may use different colors, symbols, or typography to tell that story. The degree of change varies by design; there is no single City Edition look shared by every franchise.
To understand what a particular uniform is communicating, look at the inspiration named by the team or the NBA, then consider how the colors and symbols relate to the team’s usual visual identity. Official NBA descriptions provide examples of distinct inspirations, but do not rank designs by popularity or measure their impact.

Are City Edition uniforms also merchandise?
Yes. NBA announcements have directed fans to NBA Store for City Edition jerseys, including the 2023–24 season. That confirms the uniforms are sold as fan apparel, but it does not establish that sales are the reason teams create them or show how much they affect revenue, viewership, or fandom.
Availability is season-specific and can change. A past season’s announcement does not confirm that a particular team’s older design is still in stock.

What is the current context for NBA alternate uniforms?
In a September 9, 2026 announcement, Nike described its NBA Standard Issue collection as fan apparel intended to connect what athletes wear on court with fans’ devotion to their teams. The announcement listed hoodies, pants, T-shirts, and shorts, with launch drops scheduled for September 15 and October 12 at Nike.com, NBAStore.com, and selected retailers. It also announced Specter Edition uniforms and apparel for eight franchises rooted in the NBA’s earliest chapters, with availability later in fall 2026 and designs drawing on franchise history, city heritage, and fan culture.
Those announcements show that uniform and fan-apparel categories can evolve from season to season. They do not establish that City Edition uniforms have disappeared league-wide.
