To make room quickly, check Settings > Storage, then delete a game or app you can reinstall later. If you want to keep its installation data, move it to USB extended storage—but a PS5 game stored there must be copied back before you can play it. For games you want to launch directly from expanded storage, use a compatible internal M.2 SSD.
Check what is using space
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage.
- Review the free capacity and the categories using console storage, such as games and apps, media, and saved data.
- Open Console Storage > Games and Apps to find installed titles and apps you could remove or move.
Check the target game’s installation size and any additional space or update requirement shown by the console or store. There is no reliable universal amount of free space that guarantees a particular large game will install.
Free space fastest by deleting a game or app
Select a title or app you are not using right now and choose Delete. Deleting a purchased game or app removes its installation, not your access to the purchase; PlayStation says it can be downloaded again from your game library. You may need to download it again or reinstall from disc when you want it back.
Deleting an installation and deleting saved progress are different actions. Do not remove saved data unless that is what you intend, and check the relevant backup or save behavior before deleting local data you cannot afford to lose. Keep installed data by moving games and apps
If a compatible destination is connected, open the Game Library, highlight the game, press Options, select Move Games and Apps, choose an available destination, then select Move. The available destinations depend on the storage connected and the content being moved.
USB extended storage: useful for an archive
USB extended storage can hold PS5 game data, helping clear console space, but it is not a direct play location for PS5 games: those must be copied back to console storage or M.2 storage before launching. Sony specifies a SuperSpeed USB drive rated at 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Not every device is guaranteed to work; Sony also says not to connect the drive through a USB hub and permits only one USB extended-storage drive at a time. Format and use the drive through the console’s storage settings, following the on-screen prompts.
Internal M.2 SSD: keep PS5 games ready to launch
A compatible internal M.2 SSD can store, download, and launch PS5 and PS4 games without the USB copy-back step. Sony’s requirements include a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe SSD with a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, effective heat dissipation, and supported physical dimensions. Sony recommends at least 5,500 MB/s sequential read speed; that recommendation is not a guarantee that every game will perform identically to console storage.

Before buying, verify the exact PS5 model, current installation instructions, and assembled drive-plus-heatsink measurements against Sony’s M.2 SSD installation and compatibility requirements. The specified supported sizes are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110; maximum width is 25 mm, supported lengths are 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm, and maximum total thickness is 11.25 mm with limits for components above and below the board. Cooling hardware must fit within those constraints.
As one verified example rather than a value or performance recommendation, PlayStation Direct lists an officially licensed 8 TB WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD with a heatsink designed for the PS5 M.2 slot. Check the current product listing and dimensions before purchase.

Choose the right option for the data you need to keep

Move saves or captures only if those are the space problem
Game installations, saved data, and captures or media are separate categories. Cloud storage is for supported saved data, not game installations, and the cloud-storage option requires PlayStation Plus. USB transfer and export support varies by data type; PlayStation’s storage guide covers the available paths. Moving a save alone may not free meaningful space if game installations are what fill the console.
