Netflix’s case for games is that they can extend an entertainment service already reaching an audience approaching one billion people: more ways to interact with its stories, play together, and deepen member engagement. The company has reported early usage signals, but its latest disclosures do not quantify gaming revenue or show how much games cause retention to improve.
What Netflix says games can do for its platform
Netflix presents games as part of its broader entertainment service, not as a separately reported business with gaming revenue disclosed in the cited materials. In its Q1 2026 shareholder letter, filed with the SEC on April 16, 2026, the company described games as one way to broaden entertainment choices and win more “moments of truth” with members.
The argument rests on turning existing reach into more kinds of interaction. A member might watch a series, play a game connected to it, or join a family or party game on a TV. That is Netflix’s strategic rationale; reach alone does not demonstrate that members will play.
Netflix’s scale is an opportunity, not proof of game adoption
Netflix described its audience as approaching one billion people, estimated its share of global TV viewing at approximately 5%, and said it had penetrated less than 45% of its broadband-household total addressable market at the end of 2025. These are Netflix’s own estimates and framing in its Q1 2026 letter, not independent market measurements. The figures indicate the scale of the platform and the room Netflix believes it has to grow, but they do not tell us how many people play its games.

The four game categories in Netflix’s current framing
The Q1 2026 letter groups Netflix’s focus into four categories:
- Narrative: story-led games that can connect with Netflix’s entertainment properties.
- Party and puzzle: accessible formats suited to casual or shared play.
- Mainstream: games intended to reach beyond a narrow audience.
- Kids: titles aimed at younger members and families.
This is the company’s current strategic grouping in the cited disclosure, not a promise that every category has the same scale, availability, or business performance.

What Netflix has disclosed about usage and retention
Netflix reported that about 10% of kids’ profiles had played Netflix games. It also said nearly half of kids’ profiles viewed content on mobile devices and tablets. Both figures are limited to kids’ profiles; neither should be read as a share of all profiles or paying households, and the mobile-viewing figure is not itself a measure of game use.
The company also described promising traction for cloud games on TV and said its virtual controller app had recently topped the most-downloaded iOS app chart. Netflix said its data suggests gameplay can positively affect retention. Co-CEO Gregory Peters similarly said in September 2025 that games delivered what one would expect: “increased engagement and increased retention.” These are company statements about its interpretation of results. The cited disclosures do not quantify the retention effect or establish that games caused it.

Nor do these sources provide a total player count, game-play hours, or a gaming revenue figure. The available signals suggest Netflix is pursuing engagement and retention through games, but they do not establish the size of gaming’s financial contribution.
How Netflix’s strategic explanation has evolved
At a September 2025 company conference, Peters estimated the consumer games market at $140 billion outside China and advertising. That was an executive estimate, not an independently verified figure in the cited source. He discussed games based on Netflix intellectual property, kids’ titles, shared TV play, and distribution of known games, pointing to Grand Theft Auto and Squid Game: Unleashed as examples he said worked for members.

Netflix’s Q2 2024 shareholder letter had earlier said Grand Theft Auto performed well on the service and that games based on Netflix properties were appealing, particularly when timed with a series or film launch. It also described Netflix Stories, interactive fiction tied to Netflix shows and films. That is useful history on the company’s approach to licensing, adaptations, and release timing—not a current catalog list. The newer Q1 2026 letter uses the four categories above.
