Nintendo delayed the planned U.S. Switch 2 preorder start in April 2025 while it assessed the potential impact of tariffs and changing market conditions. Preorders began April 24, 2025, and the console launched June 5, 2025. The current U.S. Nintendo MSRP is $499.99 before tax, effective September 1, 2026—not the $449.99 launch price announced in 2025.
Why were Switch 2 preorders delayed?
Nintendo had initially scheduled U.S. preorders for April 9, 2025. On April 4, it said preorders would not begin that day so the company could assess “the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions,” according to a statement Nintendo provided to media and reported by Axios.

The explanation was about assessing potential effects; Nintendo did not publish a figure for how much tariffs would add to the cost of each console. There is no substantiated per-console tariff increase to calculate from the available official pricing announcements.
When did U.S. preorders start, and did the launch date change?
Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 U.S. update set retail preorders for April 24 and apologized for the delay. It kept the launch date at June 5, 2025, the date Nintendo had announced on April 2, 2025.

Nintendo said the delay was intended to reduce uncertainty for customers. It did not announce a change to the console’s launch date.
Did tariffs make the console more expensive?
Not at launch, according to Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 announcement: the company kept the U.S. standalone launch MSRP at $449.99 and the console-plus-Mario-Kart-World bundle at $499.99. Those are historical launch prices, not current U.S. MSRP. Nintendo’s announcement attributed accessory price adjustments to changes in market conditions, but did not assign a tariff amount to any particular accessory.

Nintendo later revised the standalone console MSRP. Its May 2026 investor presentation lists a U.S. price change from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Nintendo says U.S. prices exclude tax. The materials establish the revised MSRP and its effective date, but do not quantify how much of the increase, if any, was caused by tariffs.

Those are not confirmed current prices.

Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some original Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible.
