Nintendo supports both standard game cards, which are distinct from game-key cards, and game-key cards, which act as keys to download the game data. Check the specific game’s box and listing before buying: the format determines what you download, whether you need internet, and whether the card must stay inserted to play.
What do the Switch 2 physical-game labels mean?
Nintendo recognizes standard Nintendo Switch 2 game cards and game-key cards. A standard game card is different from a game-key card: the latter does not hold the full game data. It provides the physical key needed to download and play the game. Nintendo also warns that some publishers may sell a box containing only a download code and no game card at all.
These are separate purchase formats, not interchangeable names for the same thing. The word “physical” alone does not tell you whether the game data is on the card, whether you will receive a card that must be inserted to play, or whether the package contains only a code. Read the format and contents listed for the exact title, region, and retail edition.
What does a game-key card require?
Download and storage
You need an internet connection for the initial download, plus enough free space in the Switch 2’s system memory or on a microSD Express card. Nintendo says the package identifies the required free space. The game data is stored on the console or microSD Express card, not on the game-key card. Nintendo’s US FAQ says a Nintendo Account is not required to download it.

First launch and later play
Internet is required for the first launch. After the game has launched, you can play offline, but the game-key card must be inserted whenever you want to play. Taking the card to another Switch 2 is possible, but that console also needs its own download of the game data.
Game-key card versus code in a box
A game-key card remains necessary to play; a download-code package may contain no game card. Do not assume a boxed copy includes a key card just because it is physical packaging. Check the product description and the package label for the particular edition.

How are Switch 2 Edition cards different?
Nintendo says physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games include the Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack on the same card. In an original Nintendo Switch, that card runs the Nintendo Switch version, without features exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition. A card for a Switch 2-exclusive game does not run on the original Switch.
Do original Nintendo Switch game cards work on Switch 2?
Switch 2 supports compatible Nintendo Switch game cards, but Nintendo cautions that some original Switch titles may not be fully compatible because the consoles use different hardware. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for the specific older game rather than assuming every card will work perfectly.

Why did Nintendo introduce game-key cards?
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa described game-key cards as a way to accommodate larger game data sizes on Switch 2 compared with the original Switch. In Nintendo’s English translation of the Q&A summary from its 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, he said: “This is one of the new software distribution methods we have introduced to accommodate the larger game data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to Nintendo Switch.” That is Nintendo’s stated rationale for the format; it does not mean every publisher will use it or that any particular game must.
