Why PayPal is unavailable on Steam in some currencies
Valve’s Steam Support purchasing notice gives this explanation: “In early July 2025, PayPal notified Valve that their acquiring bank for payment transactions in certain currencies was immediately terminating the processing of any transactions related to Steam.” Valve does not name the acquiring bank.

Valve says PayPal purchases remain available in EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD and USD. Its notice says purchases in other transaction currencies are affected. The statement describes a limit on one payment method; it does not say Steam removed those currencies from its store.

This is the currency of the Steam transaction, not a simple test of the buyer’s country or membership in a region. PC Gamer noted that a customer in Poland paying in złoty (PLN) could not use PayPal for that purchase even though Poland is in the EU; the relevant distinction is PLN versus EUR. PC Gamer’s August 13, 2025 report also cited contemporaneous reports from Switzerland, Poland, Norway and Mexico as examples, not as a complete list of affected places.

Does this mean Steam stopped supporting your local currency?
No. Steam’s store currency support and PayPal’s ability to process a Steam payment are separate things. Valve’s Steamworks supported-currencies documentation says currencies marked live are available to Steam customers. Its published live list includes PLN, NOK, MXN and CHF, among others, even though those currencies are outside the six named in Valve’s PayPal notice.
The same documentation says Steam charges in USD in countries without native-currency support, except geographically European countries, which use EUR. That store-currency policy does not itself determine whether PayPal will appear as a checkout option for a particular transaction.

What Valve has said about a return
Valve says it hopes to restore PayPal for the affected currencies, but has not announced when. Its Steam Support notice states: “We hope to offer PayPal as an option for these currencies in the future but the timeline is uncertain.” Valve also says it is evaluating additional payment methods and directs customers to the methods currently shown in Steam checkout.
In a later report, GamesRadar said Valve told Rock Paper Shotgun that the acquiring-bank stoppage was “regarding content on Steam, related to what we’ve previously commented on surrounding Mastercard.” Valve was also quoted as saying that one of PayPal’s acquiring banks decided to stop processing Steam transactions, cutting off PayPal in a number of currencies. GamesRadar’s August 14, 2025 report supplies that additional context. Neither the support notice nor the report names the bank or gives its own account of the decision, so a more specific motive should not be treated as established.

What to do if PayPal is missing at Steam checkout
- Check the payment methods Steam currently offers. Valve directs customers to use another available checkout method if PayPal is not available for their transaction. Availability can depend on the buyer’s region and transaction currency.
- If none works, consider adding funds with a Steam Wallet code. Valve suggests a code as an option for adding funds. Check the code’s region and redemption terms before buying; a Wallet code does not restore PayPal or guarantee that every code can be redeemed in every region.
