That shows extraordinary cumulative reach and continued support—not how many people are playing today or what keeps each player coming back.
How many people still play GTA 5?
There is no unified current player total established by the official materials cited here. Take-Two’s fiscal first-quarter 2027 results say Grand Theft Auto V had “sold-in over 230 million units worldwide” to date. That is the company’s cumulative worldwide sales-in figure, not a count of active players, simultaneous sessions, or copies sold during that quarter. Sales-in and active play measure different things. The figure establishes the scale of the game’s distribution over time; it cannot show how many owners still play, how often they play, or how many are online at once. Nor does a count from one storefront, platform, or service represent the entire audience across consoles and PC.

Why has GTA 5 stayed relevant for so long?
GTA Online gives the game an ongoing business and content layer
Take-Two continues to identify both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online among the largest contributors to its results. The company defines recurrent consumer spending to include virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases, and in-game advertising. That supports the conclusion that the online component remains commercially important, but it does not reveal a current player count or explain any individual player’s reasons for returning. Rockstar has continued supporting multiple platform generations
Rockstar’s official update notes dated October 1, 2026 cover PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC Enhanced/Legacy. The notes document new seasonal content and fixes in 2026, evidence that the game has continued to receive support across a wide range of platforms. An update record shows that content and maintenance continued; it does not establish how many players used each version. Rockstar’s GTA V update notes list supported platforms and changes.
New-generation editions added technical upgrades
Rockstar announced that the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions offer graphics modes up to 4K and 60 frames per second, improved textures, HDR options, ray tracing, faster loading, immersive 3D audio, and platform-specific features. These are Rockstar’s published feature claims, not independent performance measurements, and they apply to the versions it identified rather than every edition.
