Players were baffled because Persona 5: The Phantom X frames a real-world form of harassment through an unusually campy English-language villain. Takeyuki Kiuchi, the game’s opening antagonist, deliberately slams into people in subway settings; the meme-worthy part for many Western players was the theatrical dialogue and presentation, not the behavior itself.
Who is the Subway Slammer?
Takeyuki Kiuchi is the first major antagonist in Persona 5: The Phantom X, which launched globally on 26 June 2025, according to GosuGamers. In the story, he intentionally crashes into people in subway settings. One line reported by the outlet captures the English presentation: “The whole subway’s mine for the slammin’!”
That exaggerated declaration helped turn a story target into an ironic fan favorite in some online discussion, as GosuGamers described it. It is an account of a visible reaction, not evidence that all players found him funny or that a survey measured the meme’s reach.
Why did the character become a meme?
A serious subject in a comic-book wrapper
Gaming coverage connects Kiuchi’s conduct to butsukari otoko, a term for deliberately bumping or bodychecking people in crowded Japanese public spaces. The behavior is harassment, and can be physically harmful; it is not a harmless joke just because the game gives its antagonist a ridiculous name and bombastic lines. GosuGamers’ coverage discusses that real-world context.

The English performance felt especially theatrical
For many Western players, the contrast between the recognizable social issue and the villain’s over-the-top English dialogue made the character land as camp. That response is about the writing and delivery: the seriousness of deliberate bodily harassment remains separate from the comic-book style used to depict its perpetrator.
What did the developers say about the reaction?
In a PC Gamer interview published 26 December 2025, chief producer Yohsuke Uda acknowledged that “There may be some nuances that were lost in translation when we did that.” He said the team was surprised when people cheered as the character appeared at Anime Expo in Los Angeles.

Uda described the intent as drawing attention to a serious issue in Japan and showing that the kinds of problems depicted in Persona also happen in reality. He said that, although the audience response differed from what the team expected, it still offered a way to make people aware of the issue. His comments suggest localization may have contributed to the mismatch, but do not establish it as the only cause.
How did the reactions differ?
| Context | What the coverage establishes |
|---|---|
| Story premise | Kiuchi deliberately slams into people, invoking a serious real-world behavior discussed as butsukari otoko. |
| English-language response | Some Western players treated his campy villain presentation as meme material; the available coverage does not quantify that response. |
| Anime Expo | Uda said the crowd cheered when the character appeared, a reaction he found surprising. |
| Localization | Uda allowed that nuance may have been lost in translation; no source establishes localization as the sole explanation. |
These are qualitative accounts, not a measurement of Japanese or Western player opinion as a whole. Neither the coverage nor the producer’s comments support treating any one reaction as universal.

What is known about the opening story’s reception?
VICE reported on 1 July 2025 that director Yusuke Nitta criticized the former writer associated with the opening storyline in social posts that were later deleted. That is VICE’s account of the posts, not a currently available official statement from Nitta; the deleted text should not be treated as independently verified here. VICE’s report also characterized the opening arc as divisive.
There is no attributable statistic in the cited coverage establishing how prevalent butsukari otoko is or how many players joined the Subway Slammer meme. The phrase “a hundred memes,” used descriptively in coverage, is not a documented count.
