PlayStation and Xbox are no longer just boxes connected to a television: their ecosystems also include subscription libraries, remote play, and—in some cases—cloud gaming on phones, computers, TVs, or handheld screens. But the distinction matters: some options stream from a console you own, while others run games in the cloud, with separate membership, device, game, and regional requirements.
What “beyond the console” means for players
The change is not that consoles have become irrelevant. It is that the console is now one part of a larger way to access games. A subscription can provide a catalog; a compatible device can receive a streamed game; and a console can send its own gameplay to another screen. Those options are not interchangeable, and “play anywhere” does not mean every game works on every device.
The practical questions are where the game runs, what device you play on, whether a membership is needed, and whether the particular game and feature are available where you live.
Remote Play and cloud gaming are different
| Mode | Where the game runs | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Remote Play | Your PS4 or PS5 console | The console streams its gameplay to a compatible device. You need the console, and it must be connected to broadband. PlayStation’s Remote Play guide lists compatible devices and requirements. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming | PlayStation’s cloud service | Select eligible games stream to PS5 or Portal without being streamed from your own console. It requires Premium, and only eligible games and regions are included. PlayStation’s PlayStation Plus guide explains the service. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Xbox’s cloud service | Supported games can stream to compatible internet-connected devices under supported Game Pass plans. Xbox also describes downloading games to supported devices for offline play, which is different from streaming. Xbox Cloud Gaming lists service and device information. |
In short, Remote Play extends a console you already have to another screen; cloud gaming streams from a service. Both depend on a network, but only Remote Play inherently depends on your own console being available.

How to play PlayStation games away from the TV
Use Remote Play from a PS4 or PS5
PlayStation Remote Play streams games from your console to compatible phones, tablets, computers, another PlayStation console, or the PlayStation Portal remote player. The console remains the source of the game, so this is useful for playing in another room or on a supported device, not for replacing the console altogether. Device compatibility and setup details are listed in PlayStation’s Remote Play guide.
PlayStation states that a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps is needed to establish a Remote Play session and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are vendor thresholds, not guarantees: Wi-Fi quality, congestion, and the connection at both ends can affect play.

Stream eligible games with PlayStation Plus Premium
Cloud streaming is a separate option for select PS5 games, including eligible titles in the service catalog and selected digital games from a player’s library. PlayStation says a Premium membership is required; game eligibility, account requirements, and regional availability apply. The company’s US information page says 5 Mbps upload and download are needed to establish a session, with higher listed speeds for selected resolutions. Check PlayStation’s current service information for the applicable details; the figures do not promise a particular experience.
What the PlayStation Portal does—and does not do
Portal is a dedicated handheld screen for playing PS5 games. Its Remote Play mode streams from a PS5, while its cloud-streaming mode is a distinct feature for eligible games with PlayStation Plus Premium. It is not a portable console that independently runs every PS5 game, and the two modes have different requirements. See Remote Play and PlayStation Plus for their respective limits.

How Xbox extends beyond the console
Cloud gaming on compatible screens
Xbox describes Cloud Gaming on compatible internet-connected devices, including PCs, phones, and selected televisions. Its service page lists select LG, Samsung, and VIDAA OS-powered smart TVs, as well as Amazon Fire TV devices; that does not mean every model in those product families is supported. Check the live Xbox Cloud Gaming device information before relying on a particular screen.
Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide says cloud gaming is included with Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Plans and included features can change, so confirm current terms and availability for your country on Xbox’s Game Pass page. A compatible device and stable internet connection are also required.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Streaming is not the same as downloading
Xbox also describes downloading games to supported consoles, PCs, or handheld devices for offline play. A download runs locally on the device; cloud gaming streams a game over the internet. The relevant game, device, and plan determine which option is available.
Controllers and compatible devices
Xbox names its own controllers and verified third-party options from 8BitDo, GameSir, Backbone, and Sony DualSense among controller choices for cloud gaming. This is a list of supported categories, not a recommendation that one model is necessary or best. Compatibility can depend on the device and game; consult Xbox’s device guidance.

What subscriptions add—and what they do not
Memberships can bundle access to game catalogs and streaming features, but they do not make the services equivalent. PlayStation Plus Premium is required for the described PlayStation cloud streaming, while Xbox’s December 2025 guide identifies cloud gaming with Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Catalogs, eligible personal-library games, supported devices, and country availability differ.
In its December 19, 2025 guide, Xbox described Game Pass Ultimate as offering more than 400 games across console, PC, and other devices, and Essential as offering access to more than 50 games. Those are Microsoft’s dated descriptions of its plans, not fixed catalog sizes or independent comparisons. The same guide reported that Xbox cloud gaming hours had risen 45% “since this time last year” as the service rolled out to millions of new gamers. That is Xbox’s own usage claim, not an industry-wide measurement.
Choose the option that fits how you play
- You own a PlayStation and want to play on another screen: Remote Play streams from your PS4 or PS5. Confirm the receiving device is supported and that your home and remote connections are suitable.
- You want PlayStation cloud streaming: Check whether the game is eligible, whether Premium and your account qualify, and whether the feature is available in your territory.
- You want Xbox games on a TV, phone, or PC without using a console: Check Xbox Cloud Gaming’s supported devices and the Game Pass plan and regional terms currently offered to you.
- You want to play without an internet connection: Streaming is not the fit. Where supported, download the game to the device that will run it and check the game’s offline requirements.
Network and availability limits to check
Streaming quality depends on more than a headline speed. PlayStation’s stated 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation for Remote Play, and its separate cloud-session requirements, apply to the specific services described by PlayStation; Xbox calls for a stable internet connection and a compatible device. These are vendor guidelines, not universal performance benchmarks.
Before subscribing or buying a device, check the service’s current country availability, compatible-device list, membership rules, and eligible games. A feature shown on a service page may not be offered for every territory, device model, or title.
