It was not part of the game’s launch platforms, and as of October 8, 2026, no release date or formal launch announcement for a Switch 2 version has been published. A developer has said the version is being worked on, but no one has explained publicly why it was not ready at launch.
Where the game stands now
Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play, team-based PvP superhero shooter. It launched globally on December 6, 2024, on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, the Epic Games Store, and the game’s official website. Switch 2 was not on that list, and it has not been added to the platform list in the official release FAQ, which was published December 5, 2024.

The status has moved since launch, though not to a release. In March 2026, Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo told IGN that a Switch 2 version was in progress. Nintendo Life reported those comments on March 25, 2026. That is a statement about development, not a launch. Until the publisher or Nintendo announces a date, the accurate description is “in progress, unannounced.”

The PC system requirements in the FAQ (Windows 10 64-bit, version 1909 or newer; 16 GB RAM; 70 GB of storage; DirectX 12) apply to PC only. They say nothing about Switch 2 hardware or performance.

Why it was absent at launch
Two facts are documented. NetEase and Marvel Games announced the game on March 27, 2024, as in development for PC. The launch platform list then named no Nintendo hardware. That explains the original scope, but it does not explain why a Switch 2 version was not ready in December 2024.
No source reviewed for this article gives a reason for the timing. Engineering work, performance targets, staffing, business priorities, and approval or certification steps are all possible factors, but none has been confirmed for this game. Any article that names one as the cause is going beyond the public record.

The IGN original was not checked directly for this article, so these quotations are attributed to Nintendo Life’s report. The same report gives no release date, price, system requirements, performance target, or technical explanation.

Can Switch 2’s backward compatibility run it?
No. Switch 2 can play many original Switch games, but Nintendo’s support page says that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” The page is undated and was accessed October 8, 2026. For third-party games, Nintendo directs players to the publisher for game-specific compatibility. Marvel Rivals is not an original Switch game and does not appear on the official platform list, so the general compatibility statement does not tell you whether the game runs on Switch 2.

If you want to play now, use one of the platforms that were listed at launch. If you already own a supported device, that is the simplest choice. If you are buying hardware specifically for the game, a PlayStation 5 is one option, since PlayStation was on the launch list. Xbox and PC are also listed. The game itself is free to play, but the console or PC you use may cost money.

Account data cannot currently carry over between platforms, according to the official FAQ. If you switch platforms, your progress and purchases will not follow you automatically.
What to check before you buy or wait
- The official Marvel Rivals news page and social channels, which are the places a Switch 2 announcement would appear first.
- Nintendo’s own announcements for Switch 2 release information. A third-party listing is not evidence of a release.
- The official release FAQ, which lists the supported platforms and is the reference for any platform changes.
Platform plans can change quickly, so treat this status as a snapshot from October 2026 and check the sources above before making a purchase decision.
