Sony announced in February 2026 that it planned to close Bluepoint Games in March. In an internal message reproduced by news coverage, PlayStation Studios chief Hermen Hulst attributed the decision to rising development costs, slower industry growth, changing player behavior and broader economic pressures. Those are Sony’s stated reasons; the available reporting does not disclose the business review’s detailed analysis or establish that any one factor independently caused the closure.

What Hermen Hulst said about closing Bluepoint

Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, wrote in a staff email reproduced by GameSpot: “Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably.”

That is Sony’s explanation, not a public financial breakdown. A Sony spokesperson separately told Bloomberg that the closure followed a recent business review. The reporting does not show how Sony weighed the factors or provide project-level economics. Hulst also said Sony would look for opportunities for some affected employees elsewhere in its studio network where possible.

What Bluepoint made and why it mattered to PlayStation

Founded in Austin, Texas, in 2006, Bluepoint built a long working relationship with Sony before becoming part of PlayStation Studios. Sony announced the acquisition in September 2021, describing more than 15 years of collaboration and highlighting the studio’s expertise in remakes and remasters. Its work included Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Shadow of the Colossus and Gravity Rush. Sony’s announcement described Bluepoint as a 70-person team at that time. Bluepoint’s PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls, released in 2020, was a launch title for the console. Sony reported that it had sold more than 1.4 million copies as of September 19, 2021. That is a dated sales snapshot, not a lifetime total through 2026. The game is a prominent example of the studio’s remake work, but the figure alone does not reveal the project’s profitability or its bearing on Sony’s later decision.

Bluepoint also co-developed God of War Ragnarök. In January 2025, Sony canceled a live-service God of War project that contemporary reports attributed to Bluepoint. GameSpot and Gematsu reported these details as context around the closure. Neither report establishes that the canceled project alone caused the studio’s closure or explains the internal sequence of decisions.

What is known about the timing and job impact

Sony’s announced plan was to close Bluepoint in March 2026, following the February announcement. Bloomberg reported that roughly 70 employees were expected to lose their jobs; that was an estimate at the time, not a verified final count. It is separate from Sony’s 2021 description of Bluepoint as a 70-person team. Bloomberg also reported Sony’s statement that the decision followed a recent business review. Bloomberg

The available coverage does not confirm whether the closure was completed on the announced schedule, the final number of employees affected, or how many workers found roles elsewhere at Sony. Hulst’s statement about seeking internal opportunities was conditional, not a guarantee of placements.
