Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAn original PlayStation 3 disc will not run on a PlayStation 5: Sony’s current support documentation explicitly says that PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. PS2 and PS3 games can sometimes be played on newer hardware through a remaster, remake or Classics Catalog streaming, but those options are title- and region-specific. They are not the same as inserting the original disc.
The answer also depends on the exact console model. PS5 compatibility is broad for PS4 software, while PS3-to-PS2 compatibility was limited to certain historical PS3 revisions and was never guaranteed for every game.

The key rule: PlayStation compatibility is generation-specific
Backward compatibility is not a universal feature that carries every older disc forward. Sony’s PS5 support page says the console plays the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, but it also states plainly: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” That PS4-to-PS5 support should not be generalized to PS2 or PS3 software.
A disc drive only determines whether the console can read a physical disc. It does not add support for an otherwise incompatible generation. Changing a setting, cleaning the disc or restarting the PS5 cannot make an original PS3 disc playable on that console.

What PS5 supports physically
A PS5 console with a disc drive can use supported PS4 discs. A PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, so PS4 discs cannot be used with it. Neither PS5 edition supports original PS3 discs. The distinction is important: a physical drive is necessary for supported disc generations, but it is not sufficient for unsupported ones.
What happens to PS3 games on PS5?
An original PS3 game disc cannot be installed or played natively on PS5. If the title is available on the newer console, it must arrive through a separate release or service.
Original PS3 disc
There is no PS5 setting or official disc conversion that turns an original PS3 disc into a PS5 game. If the game package says PlayStation 3 and you own the physical disc, the PS5 support rule is decisive: the disc itself is not supported.

Remaster or remake
Some PS2 and PS3 games have been rebuilt or remastered for PS4 or PS5. A downloadable remaster is a separate product with its own license and installation, not playback of the original disc. The fact that a remaster exists does not mean every edition of the old game is available, and it does not transfer the old disc automatically.

Classics Catalog access
Sony’s service documentation distinguishes original PS2 and PS3 titles offered for streaming from remastered or remade versions that can be downloaded on PS4 or PS5. The current US support page says eligible Classics Catalog games require the correct PlayStation Plus membership plan and are accessed on supported consoles. Catalog entries, tiers and regional availability can change, so the individual game listing is the authority for a current decision.
Can a PS5 play PS2 discs?
Original PS2 discs are not presented by Sony as a generally supported PS5 disc format. A PS2 title may be available on PS5 only if Sony has supplied a compatible digital release, remake, remaster or streaming version for that specific game and market.
Do not confuse an older game appearing in the PlayStation Store or Classics Catalog with the console reading the PS2 disc. The modern version is delivered through a different format and may have different performance, features or save-data behavior.
Can a PS3 play PS2 games?
Some historical PS3 systems had limited compatibility with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software, but it was never safe to assume that every PS3 played every PS2 game. A Sony PS3 system guide states: “Many PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format software titles operate, but full compatibility is not guaranteed.” That warning applies to the documented system and should not be expanded into a claim about every PS3 revision.

Why the exact PS3 model matters
PS3 revisions differed in their support for older-format software. The model number on the console or packaging, the region and the exact PS2 title all matter. A compatibility answer based only on the word “PS3” is incomplete.
If original PS2 playback is your goal, verify the model-specific information for the particular console and game before buying. A PS3 that works with one PS2 title may fail with another, and a later revision may not offer the same support as an earlier system.
Three legitimate ways to play an older game
| Route | What you use | What must be true | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original disc | The PS2 or PS3 disc in a compatible older console | The console generation and exact model support that format and title | PS5 does not support PS3 discs; PS3-to-PS2 support varies by model and game |
| Downloadable remaster or remake | A version released for PS4 or PS5 | The specific title has an official release in the reader’s region | It is a separate product, not automatic use of the old disc |
| Classics Catalog streaming | An eligible title streamed through PlayStation Plus | The game is currently listed, the correct membership plan is active and the service is available in the region | Catalog access can change and streaming depends on the internet connection |
There is no universal best route. The right choice depends on whether you already own a disc, whether the title has a modern release, how much you value local play and whether the required catalog plan is available where you live.

Sony’s current US support information sets a minimum broadband requirement of 5 Mbps for eligible Classics Catalog streaming. Sony lists 15 Mbps as the requirement for 1080p streaming when the game supports that resolution. Those figures describe the connection needed for the streaming service; they do not make an unsupported disc compatible.

Check the membership and market first
- Search the current PlayStation Classics Catalog for the exact game title, including the correct regional version where applicable.
- Confirm that the listing is available in your country and that your PlayStation Plus plan includes the game’s streaming access.
- Check whether the listing says streaming, download, or both. An original PS2 or PS3 title offered for streaming is not the same as a downloadable remaster.
- Measure the broadband connection used by the PS4 or PS5. Plan for at least 5 Mbps, and at least 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming where the title supports it.
- Remember that catalog membership and availability are changeable. Recheck the listing before paying for a plan specifically to play one game.
How to diagnose a specific “game won’t run” case
- Identify the game generation. Read the label on the disc or case. “PlayStation 2” and “PlayStation 3” are different formats, even when the game has a similar name on another platform.
- Identify the console edition and model. Record whether the system is a PS5 Disc Edition, PS5 Digital Edition or a particular PS3 revision. A disc-based solution is impossible on a PS5 Digital Edition because it has no drive.
- Separate disc ownership from digital availability. Ask whether you need the original disc to work or whether you would accept a separate remaster, remake or streaming version.
- Check the current title listing. Search the PlayStation Store or Classics Catalog for the exact title and region. A similarly named release may be a different edition.
- Verify the membership requirement. If the game is streamed, confirm the plan tier required in your market before subscribing.
- Choose the route that matches the evidence. Use the older compatible console for an original disc, buy the official modern release when offered, or stream the catalog version when the title and plan qualify.
Common failure modes and what they mean
“My PS5 accepts the disc but does nothing”
If the disc is a PS3 game, this is expected behavior under Sony’s support policy. The PS5 drive cannot turn an unsupported generation into a supported one. Look for an official PS4 or PS5 version, a current Classics Catalog entry or an older console that supports the disc.
“The game appears in the store, so my disc should unlock it”
A store listing may represent a remaster, remake or separate digital edition. Unless the listing specifically provides a supported entitlement for your disc, assume the modern version must be obtained separately.
“My friend’s PS3 plays PS2 games, but mine does not”
Different PS3 revisions had different levels of PS2 compatibility, and Sony warned that full compatibility was not guaranteed. Compare the exact model numbers and check the specific PS2 title rather than relying on another owner’s result.

Confirm that the connection meets the stated 5 Mbps minimum. For 1080p, Sony lists 15 Mbps when the title supports that resolution. A qualifying catalog entry still depends on network conditions and the game’s supported output.

- Built-in Blu-ray player to give you the best high-definition viewing experience and pristine picture quality
- 80 GB of hard disk storage for all your games, music, videos, and photos

“I bought a PS5 Digital Edition and still have PS4 discs”
The Digital Edition has no disc drive, so those discs cannot be used. A PS5 Disc Edition is required for supported PS4 discs; this does not extend to PS3 or PS2 discs.
What to verify before buying hardware or a subscription
- The exact title and original format: PS2, PS3, PS4 or a later release.
- Whether you own a disc or a digital license.
- The console model number, especially for a PS3 being considered for PS2 playback.
- Whether the console has a physical disc drive.
- Whether the desired game has an official PS4 or PS5 remaster or remake.
- Whether the original title is currently in the Classics Catalog for your region.
- The PlayStation Plus plan required for that listing.
- Your available broadband speed: at least 5 Mbps for eligible streaming, and 15 Mbps for 1080p where supported.
Why online answers often conflict
People commonly use “backward compatible” to describe three different situations: a console reading an original disc, a store selling a modernized version and a subscription service streaming an older game. Those routes have different requirements. A statement that a game is “available on PS5” may refer to any one of them and does not prove that the original PS2 or PS3 disc works.
Historical PS3 information creates another source of confusion. Some PS3 systems offered limited PS2 support, while others did not provide the same behavior. The safest answer always names the console revision and game, rather than treating all PS3 hardware as identical.

Practical examples
You have a PS3 disc and a PS5 Disc Edition
The disc itself will not play on the PS5. Check for a separately sold PS4 or PS5 remaster or remake, or look for a current Classics Catalog streaming listing. If neither exists, retain or obtain a compatible older console for the original disc.
You have a PS2 disc and a PS3
Check the PS3 model and the exact PS2 title. The historical Sony guidance says many titles operate but does not guarantee full compatibility, so a successful result on another PS3 is not proof that your system will work.
You do not own the disc but want to play a classic on PS5
Search the current catalog and store listing. If the game is offered for streaming, verify the membership plan, region and connection requirements. If it is offered as a remaster or remake, treat that as a new downloadable release.
Bottom line
PS5 supports most PS4 games, not original PS3 discs. PS2 and PS3 classics can reach newer consoles through selected remasters, remakes or Classics Catalog streaming, but availability varies by title, region and membership plan. For original discs, use a console generation and model confirmed to support that format; in particular, never assume that every PS3 plays every PS2 game.
