A disc game installs data from the disc the first time you play, while a digital game downloads and installs. Either type may also need an update. Some games let you start with part of the game while the rest is still copying or downloading, but that depends on the title.
Why a disc game still needs to install
A PS5 game disc is not a way to skip installation. Insert the disc and the console installs the game automatically the first time it is played. When installation finishes, select the game from Games home. Keep the disc inserted whenever you play: the console uses it to verify that you have the game.
Some games use two discs. Insert the data disc first, then swap to the play disc when the console prompts you. Leave the play disc in the console to play. Sony’s disc instructions explain this process, but do not establish that every game’s disc contains all of its playable content. PlayStation’s instructions for playing games on disc
Why a digital game has to download
A digital purchase does not come with game data on a disc, so the PS5 downloads it before installing it. To download a game you own, open Games home > Game Library > Your Collection, select the game, then choose Download. The console installs it automatically. For some titles, you may be able to play a portion before the complete download is ready; this is a game-specific option, not a guarantee. PlayStation’s download instructions

How updates add another wait
Installing the game and updating it are separate steps. Sony says a game or app updates to the newest version available when started, so an update may need to finish before you can play. Sony’s update instructions explain how to check for updates.
To prepare updates while the console is in rest mode, keep it connected to the internet and open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Enable Auto-Download or Auto-Install. If you want to keep a suspended game open, Sony advises enabling Auto-Download only; you can choose to install the update after resuming. Menu wording can change with system software. Where PS5 game data must be stored to play
PS5 game data can be stored on the console’s built-in storage or a compatible M.2 SSD installed in the console. A USB extended storage drive can hold PS5 game data, but a PS5 game stored there must be moved back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage before it can be played. That distinction matters: a game can be stored on USB without being ready to launch from it.
If storage is full, you can delete games or apps and redownload purchases from your Game Library, or move game data. A commercially available M.2 SSD is an optional expansion, provided it meets Sony’s current requirements. Check PlayStation’s storage guide before buying an expansion or moving data. You do not need to buy additional storage simply to install a new game if enough playable storage is available.

What to expect from the wait
- Disc: the console installs the game from the disc on first play; keep the disc inserted to play.
- Digital: the console downloads and installs the game; some titles permit partial play before the download completes.
- Update: the game may need a separate update when started.
- Storage: PS5 games on USB extended storage must be moved to console or M.2 SSD storage before play.
PlayStation’s cited support instructions do not give a general install time, typical game size, or rule that every disc contains all playable content. The wait therefore varies by title, download and update requirements, and available storage.
