Roblox said the migration would continue, while adding a facial-animation toggle and making other changes in response to feedback. Its March 23, 2026 update said the rollout was underway.
What is changing in Roblox?
On January 27, 2026, Roblox announced that it would convert Classic Head and Face combinations into corresponding Dynamic Heads and remove the separate Classic Heads and Classic Faces categories from the Marketplace. Roblox described the move as a way to simplify a growing avatar ecosystem and make heads and bodies compatible with new capabilities. Those are the company’s stated reasons, not independent proof that the migration was necessary. Roblox’s Developer Forum announcement introduced the plan.
Removing the old Marketplace categories and converting assets is not the same as saying players would lose every item they had bought. Roblox addressed Limited items in its January 29 update, saying existing owners would receive corresponding Limited Dynamic Heads and that serial numbers on Classic Faces with serial numbers would be preserved. The available statements describe a conversion; they do not establish the present inventory status of every individual account or asset.
Why did the announcement draw backlash?
PC Gamer’s January 30 report described objections to the appearance of converted faces, concerns about the value of purchased Classic Faces, and a preference among some players for supporting classic and dynamic formats side by side. These are reported concerns, not a measure of how Roblox users as a whole felt. The cited coverage and Roblox updates provide no representative poll or approval rate. Roblox acknowledged feedback about keeping faces unmoving and later added a way to disable facial animation. That response confirms the issue was raised; it does not show how common the objection was. Nor do the available sources quantify any change in resale value or establish a platform-wide financial impact.
Can you turn off Roblox facial animation?
Yes. In its March 5, 2026 update, Roblox said users would be able to turn off facial animation in the Marketplace or Editor’s Head Refinement tab. With the toggle off, Roblox said a Dynamic Head would hold an expression matching the original Classic face rather than become a blank neutral face. For experiences, Roblox also identified the HumanoidDescription.StaticFacialAnimation property. These details reflect Roblox’s description on that date; interface labels and behavior may change. The toggle is a static-expression option within the Dynamic Head system. It is not a way to keep a separate Classic Face asset or restore the old Marketplace categories. That distinction matters if the concern is the original format rather than animation itself.
What did Roblox change after the criticism?
January 29: animation and Limited-item response
Two days after the announcement, Roblox updated its post to say users would be able to disable facial animation. It also addressed Limited-item treatment and serial numbers, saying existing owners would receive corresponding Limited Dynamic Heads and that serial numbers on Classic Faces with serial numbers would be preserved.

March 5: visual-quality work
Roblox said it had made visual-quality fixes based on feedback and described using artist-made procedural methods alongside hand-tuning. It also said its Creator Hub included side-by-side comparisons for around 500 of roughly 700 face decals. That figure describes the portion with comparisons, not a measured fidelity score; Roblox’s quality goals should not be mistaken for independent verification that every conversion looks identical to its source. Roblox’s March 5 update describes the work and the toggle’s intended behavior.
March 23: rollout underway
Roblox said the migration rollout was underway and that converted assets were available in the Heads category in Marketplace and Editor. The update also described a menu for toggling facial animations and switching among head shapes a user owns. This is Roblox’s reported rollout status as of March 23, 2026, not an independent check of every account or an assurance that the interface has not since changed. The disagreement is therefore not simply about whether animation can be switched off. A user who wants a fixed expression has a toggle Roblox described; a user who wants the old standalone catalog format faces a different issue, because the toggle does not preserve that format.

The public record establishes Roblox’s announced direction, its stated reasons, the response features it described, and its reported rollout status on March 23, 2026. It also establishes that some players objected to appearance, format changes, and potential item-value effects. It does not establish that most users opposed the migration, that every converted face is visually identical to its classic version, or that item values broadly rose or fell. The practical place to check current availability is Roblox’s Marketplace or Editor, since asset listings and interface details can change.
