A crash after a few minutes does not identify one cause on its own. The right first steps depend on whether you play on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation, which Skyrim edition you have, whether you use mods or Creations, and whether the problem started after an update. Start by matching your symptoms to the checks below rather than deleting saves or assuming your hardware is at fault.
First narrow down what changed
Before changing settings, note your platform and edition, whether the game is modded, when the crashes began, and what you were doing just before one occurred. A crash after a recent update calls for a different check than a crash that began immediately after adding one Creation.

- Platform: PC, Xbox, or PlayStation. Bethesda provides separate troubleshooting for each, so use the instructions for your system: PC, Xbox, or PlayStation.
- Recent change: Check whether Skyrim updated, or whether you installed or updated a mod or Creation shortly before the crashes started.
- Trigger: Record whether the crash happens while loading a save, after a particular menu action, or during ordinary play. A specific trigger can match a known issue; “after a few minutes” by itself does not.
If the crashes began after a game update
Bethesda warns that mods and add-ons may not work correctly after a game update until their creators update them. Check whether each mod or Creation is compatible with your current game version, especially if the crash began immediately after updating. Bethesda’s post-update crash guidance covers this situation.
Do not assume every update-related crash is caused by a mod: the timing is a reason to check compatibility, not proof. If you play without mods or the problem continues after checking them, follow the crash guidance for your platform.

If a newly added Creation or mod may be involved
If the immediate problem is that a save will not load after you added a Creation or mod, Bethesda recommends uninstalling that item and reloading the save to test whether it is related. Use the instructions on Bethesda’s save-loading crash page.
This is a targeted test for a save-loading problem after adding an item. It does not establish that mods explain every crash that occurs during a play session.

PC: check requirements and background programs
For PC, start with Bethesda’s supported basics: check that your system meets Skyrim’s minimum requirements and close other programs while the game is running. Bethesda’s PC crash and black-screen steps are the platform-specific starting point.
If you are also experiencing performance or framerate problems and they persist, Bethesda advises contacting support with a DxDiag file. Its PC performance guidance addresses those symptoms; it does not identify a single cause for every timed crash.

Xbox and PlayStation: match the symptom to the current guidance
Use Bethesda’s instructions for the exact console: Xbox crash troubleshooting or PlayStation crash troubleshooting. The pages describe separate known issues, so check whether your crash matches one rather than treating either as a general explanation for crashes after several minutes.
- Xbox: Bethesda reports that an August 27, 2026 hotfix resolved a crash that could occur when opening the map multiple times.
- PlayStation: Bethesda reports a separate August 27, 2026 hotfix for a crash when opening the on-screen keyboard and submitting text on the game’s main menu.
These fixes are relevant only if your platform and actions match the reported issue. Bethesda’s August 2026 update notes also mention fixing a crash that could occur when reloading a mod without an associated master file; that is a specific mod-related case, not a diagnosis for every recurring crash.

Reinstalling and protecting your saves
If you reach the reinstall step in Bethesda’s console guidance, follow the instructions for your system. Bethesda describes reinstalling the game without deleting save files on both its Xbox and PlayStation pages. Do not delete saves as a generic first troubleshooting step.
