A PiunikaWeb report published December 19, 2025, collected complaints about Fortnite interface changes, from extra emote-wheel inputs to a busier HUD and less familiar menus. Those reactions are examples, not a survey of the player base, and the report does not establish whether the specific issues remain in the game today.
What players said was wrong with Fortnite’s interface
The complaints in PiunikaWeb’s December 19, 2025 report focused on friction and familiarity rather than one single redesign issue. Players quoted or described in the report objected to several changes:
- More steps to use emotes: The redesigned emote wheel was said to require additional button presses compared with the interaction players already knew.
- Less direct mode switching: The report says the “Recent Modes” button was removed, frustrating players who used it to return quickly to experiences they had played.
- A denser HUD: Complaints included a sprint bar and prominent storm notifications that made the on-screen display feel busier.
- Missing skydiving information: One reported complaint concerned the absence of information such as the altimeter while skydiving.
- Changed menu habits and promotions: Players objected to unfamiliar pause-menu and match-exit flows, as well as Battle Pass promotional overlays on the win screen.
The report quoted a Reddit user calling the changes “genuinely bad” and asking, “What was wrong with what we had?” It also reproduced an X post that said, “STOP TOUCHING THE UI THE FRIENDS LIST UI WAS JUST FINE BEFORE.” Those are attributed reactions in a secondary report, not evidence that all or most players agreed.
Why changes to familiar controls can feel like a downgrade
Each complaint points to a practical tradeoff: how quickly players can reach a control, how much information the HUD displays, and whether familiar navigation still works as expected. An extra input can make a frequently used action feel slower; removing a shortcut can add steps to switching modes; and a more crowded HUD can compete with gameplay information. These are ways to understand the reported reactions, not a documented explanation of Epic’s design rationale.

- Works with Nintendo Switch 2. C button not available
- Bonus Fortnite virtual item included (Googly Glider)
- Wireless controller with Bluetooth 5.0 technology
- Rechargeable lithium-ion battery: Up to 30 hours per charge*
- Two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons
Familiarity also matters. Players build habits around menus and match flows, so a redesigned route may feel worse even if its visual style or organization has changed for other reasons. The report documents dissatisfaction but does not evaluate the redesign’s goals or establish whether the interface works better for other players.
What the report does—and does not—establish
PiunikaWeb’s article is an anecdotal account: it provides no sample size, platform breakdown, or representative survey. Its examples show that some players objected to the changes, but they cannot support a percentage or a claim that the player base broadly rejected the interface.

The article was published on December 19, 2025, so its description of the “latest” overhaul is tied to that date. Epic’s Fortnite News index, accessed October 8, 2026, lists later updates, including an October 1, 2026 post. The index does not say whether the specific interface complaints described in the December report were addressed, so it cannot confirm the current state of those features.

Alongside the interface complaints, the report described a gameplay bug in which forward movement reportedly stopped after a player closed the map, even while auto-running or holding W. It said Epic_Jason, identified as an Epic lead designer, indicated that a fix was planned for v39.20. The report does not verify that the fix shipped or establish the bug’s later status; it should not be treated as part of the visual or navigation redesign itself.
