The “Chicken Jockey” theater trend was a viral audience reaction to a moment in A Minecraft Movie: when Steve, played by Jack Black, calls out “Chicken jockey!” after a baby zombie rides a chicken, some viewers shouted, cheered, jumped up, and threw popcorn or other objects. TikTok reaction videos helped turn those moments into a spectacle. The widely reported incidents date mainly to April 2025; they were not typical of every screening. Reports document confetti guns at some Utah screenings, but do not establish fireworks as a widespread feature.
What does “chicken jockey” mean in Minecraft?
A chicken jockey is a baby zombie riding a chicken, a rare creature combination in Minecraft. In the film, Steve’s shouted “Chicken jockey!” became a recognizable cue for some fans to react together. The joke was legible to players, brief enough to anticipate, and easy to repeat in a theater.
Why were people shouting and throwing popcorn?
The reaction combined recognition of the game reference with an audience expectation that the scene was a moment to perform. Videos of viewers reacting circulated on TikTok, making the crowd response part of the entertainment for some attendees. ABC News Australia reported that one reaction video had surpassed 4.3 million views when its report was updated on April 18, 2025; that was one video’s view count at that time, not a total for the trend or a current count. ABC News Australia and an academic analysis in Frontiers in Communication describe the mix of anticipation, collective participation, and online circulation.
There is no single established motive for everyone who joined in. ABC Radio National’s The Screen Show host Jason DiRosso said, “It’s hard to know why they’re doing it.” ABC’s coverage also raised filming for online posting as one possible explanation, not a reason that can be applied to every viewer.

What happened at theaters—and how widespread was it?
News reports from April 2025 documented disruptive incidents in several countries, including shouting, cheering, and popcorn or other objects being thrown. ABC News Australia reported security involvement at Australian screenings and a police inquiry after an altercation related to popcorn throwing. The Guardian covered warnings at cinemas in the UK and US, while also noting quiet screenings in Manchester. ABC News Australia The Guardian
Other reported stunts varied by venue: one Utah screening involved a live chicken, and Utah reporting described confetti guns. Those accounts do not show that fireworks were a regular part of the trend. The available reporting documents incidents, not a measured proportion of screenings or theatergoers, so it cannot support a claim that most audiences behaved this way.

How did cinemas respond?
| Screening or response | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Ordinary screenings in the UK and US | The Guardian reported cinema warnings that disruptive patrons could be removed. One New Jersey theater also required minors to be accompanied by an adult. |
| Australian incidents | ABC News Australia reported security involvement at screenings and a police inquiry after a popcorn-related altercation. |
| Designated participatory showings | Cineworld promoted special screenings where fans could dress up and shout the line, while warning them not to leave a mess. |
| Quiet screenings | The Guardian also reported screenings in Manchester where audiences were quiet. |
These responses reflect a practical distinction: an announced participatory event can set expectations for both fans and cinema staff, while throwing things or obstructing an ordinary screening affects other patrons and workers. Filmmaker Jamie Tram told ABC News Australia, “Audience participation can be spectacular fun when there are clear expectations set for both patrons and cinema workers.” ABC News Australia
Jack Black made the point with a playful warning at a screening: “for today’s presentation of ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ please no throwing popped corn.” The Los Angeles Times reported his message on April 14, 2025; it was not an official studio policy. Los Angeles Times

The response was therefore not uniformly punitive: venues issued rules or arranged special showings, and the reporting also records both quiet audiences and enthusiasm for shared participation.
