Those are examples of opinion in community discussion, not evidence that most players agree. Palia’s official record also shows free customization additions and fixes, alongside a developer-stated plan to fund the game partly by selling outfits.
What players are criticizing
The complaints are related but distinct. One is about how much players can express through their characters; the other is about the value of optional cosmetics sold for premium currency.
Character creation and expressive variety
In a recent Reddit discussion, one player described the face variety as lacking. That captures a subjective concern: even if a creator offers multiple options, players may still want more ways to make a character feel individual. A thread like this records the views of its participants, not how widespread the opinion is across Palia’s player base.
Cosmetic prices and perceived value
The same discussion included the title “Cosmetics are still way too expensive for an mmo such as this,” with comments such as “The prices in Palia shocked me” and requests to buy individual outfit pieces. These comments show why some players object to the prices or available bundles; they do not establish a community-wide consensus or measure how many players think the cosmetics are poor value. Which appearance choices are free?
Palia Support’s March 14, 2023 explanation distinguishes core character appearance from premium outfits. It says that many customization options are not monetized, specifically naming skin color, face and body type, and says players can change these choices after first creating a character without spending real money. Other requirements may apply, including in-game currency or a cooldown. This is the developer’s stated policy; it does not mean every cosmetic item is free.
Patch 0.172, dated November 7, 2023, made some of those core changes available at Jel’s shop. It specified a one-week cooldown for the listed changes. That is a historical patch detail, not confirmation that the same cooldown applies unchanged in every later version. Palia Support’s monetization explanation and Patch 0.172 notes describe the policy and update.

- 8 new skin tones
- 16 new face options
- 14 additional eye colors
- 11 hairstyles and 8 hair colors
- 9 facial-hair options
- 3 glasses
Those dated additions show that the available options expanded after launch. Patch 0.204 later corrected an eye-color change issue for masculine characters and corrected the free label for Clouded Eyes. These updates establish that options and fixes were added; they do not show that every player’s requests for greater variety have been met. Patch 0.204 notes.

Why does Palia sell premium outfits?
Palia Support says outfit sales are part of the game’s funding model: “But selling outfits is also the way we’ll financially support the game, so I do want to properly set expectations that we’ll be constantly adding new, paid outfits.” The same support article anticipated that the paid outfit catalog would eventually become significantly larger than the free one. That is the developer’s stated expectation, not a current audited comparison of the catalogs.
The funding rationale explains why paid outfits exist; it does not settle whether an individual player considers a particular item worth its price. That judgment depends on the player’s preferences and how they value optional cosmetics. Palia Support’s explanation.
