“Unplayable” refers to launch-period complaints about repeated crashes in the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Assassin’s Creed Shadows—not evidence that the game is unplayable for most players today. Ubisoft acknowledged stability issues that could lead to crashes, but the available reports do not establish how widespread they were or whether they have been fully resolved.
What players meant by “unplayable”
The reports behind the label focused on crashes: some players said the Switch 2 version repeatedly crashed during play. In December 2025, Ubisoft acknowledged that the edition had stability issues that “may lead to crashes,” as reported by Nintendo Life.

Nintendo Life also reported that 65% of respondents to its own poll had experienced at least one crash. That figure describes the poll’s respondents, not a representative sample of Switch 2 owners, so it cannot establish that 65% of players experienced crashes.
What Ubisoft said about the Switch 2 edition
Ubisoft announced a December 2, 2025 release and stated a 30 fps target in both docked and handheld modes. It also said the game could be played offline after installation. A target is a publisher’s stated goal, not an independent measurement or guarantee of sustained performance or stability. Ubisoft’s launch details are at its Switch 2 launch announcement.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The publisher described adapting the game’s large open world—originally developed for current-generation home consoles—for a portable system as a substantial technical undertaking. That is Ubisoft’s account of its porting work, not a third-party technical assessment. Its explanation is in Ubisoft’s Switch 2 port deep dive.
What later updates do—and do not—confirm
Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.1.10 notes, dated April 6, 2026, list a 5.4 GB Nintendo Switch 2 package and bug fixes. The notes do not establish that this update resolved the launch crash reports. See the official 1.1.10 release notes.

A June 2026 community repost identified handheld GPU performance improvements in Title Update 1.1.11, and a July 2026 Ubisoft/Steam announcement result scheduled Title Update 1.1.12 for Switch 2 on July 30. These references do not establish the current installed Switch 2 build as of October 8, 2026, or prove that crashes are fully fixed. The available evidence also does not provide current independent measurements of frame-rate consistency or image quality in docked or handheld play.

- The “unplayable” description reflects some players’ launch-period experiences with repeated crashes; it is not a finding about every player’s experience.
- Ubisoft acknowledged Switch 2 stability issues that could lead to crashes.
- The 65% figure is from Nintendo Life poll respondents only, not a reliable estimate of crash prevalence among all Switch 2 owners.
- Updates are documented, but the available information does not confirm the current build or whether the crash issue is fully resolved.
If you are deciding whether to play, distinguish older launch reports from your own experience with the installed build. The evidence here does not support a firm present-day reliability verdict.
