Some players want WoW: Forever to retain the old look because, for them, Classic’s art style is part of its identity and atmosphere—not simply a lower-detail version of modern WoW. But players disagree, and there is no representative statistic showing how many prefer old graphics. The appeal also reaches beyond visuals: Blizzard has described Classic’s broader feel, including its social design, as something players want preserved.
Why the old look matters to some players
For players attached to Classic, old models and familiar environments can help preserve the sense of playing an earlier World of Warcraft. That connection may be personal as well as aesthetic: a visual style can evoke the atmosphere and memories a player associates with Classic. It is not proof that the older assets are objectively better, or that everyone wants them unchanged.
Blizzard’s Classic restoration account framed the work as an effort to create an authentic experience that still looked and felt like playing World of Warcraft from 2006. Restoring that experience meant adapting old terrain and art data to a modern game system; Blizzard said the relationship between data, source code, and assets affected terrain, gameplay, animations, and lighting. The old appearance was therefore part of a wider restoration effort, not an isolated graphics setting. Blizzard’s account of restoring Classic explains that technical and artistic context.
The World of Warcraft Classic team made the broader point directly in a 2022 design update: “Many players today choose to play Classic WoW because they love that feel, and don’t want it to be lost.” That statement is about Classic’s overall feel, including game and social design; it should not be read as a claim that those players specifically chose Classic for its graphics. What players mean by “old graphics”
Calling something “old” can mean different things in this debate. A Blizzard-hosted 2019 forum thread, “Update Classic Graphics,” shows the disagreement in players’ own terms: some praise the old models or call Classic’s art style timeless, while others ask for updated graphics or challenge the idea that the look is timeless. Those posts illustrate possible viewpoints; they do not show how common any position is. The forum discussion is a snapshot of that debate, not a poll.
It helps to separate several questions that can get compressed into “better graphics”:
Rank #2
- A pre paid, 60 day subscription to world of warcraft
- Requires world of warcraft standard game box contains game card only
- Resolution and detail: Do you prefer older assets, or newer HD character models with more visual detail?
- Style and continuity: Does a model or effect feel consistent with Classic’s established visual language?
- Atmosphere and memory: Does the old look contribute to the mood or personal history you associate with the game?
- Choice and consistency: Can a visual option be applied coherently across characters and animations?
These are ways to understand the trade-offs, not measured criteria or universal priorities. A player can value a more detailed model while preferring Classic’s older visual style overall.
What WoW: Forever reportedly offers
A transcript of a BlizzCon 2026 panel reports that WoW: Forever offers a unified setting for HD or SD character models, and that Classic animations were restored across HD character models. This is reported panel information from a third-party transcript, rather than a confirmed statement from official game materials. The panel transcript describes the reported visual options.

The reported setup makes the debate less of a simple choice between old and new as mutually exclusive experiences: the account describes a model setting alongside Classic animations on HD models. The transcript does not establish every visual detail, how the setting behaves in all situations, or whether every player will find the result consistent with Classic’s look.
The appeal of Classic is bigger than graphics
Some players who left WoW may have been reacting to changes beyond the art. GamesRadar quoted world builder Matthew Armstrong describing WoW: Forever’s audience as Classic gamers and people who left because of changes to the art style, story, social aspects, game design, or their favorite classes. That is Armstrong’s description of the intended audience, not a survey of why players quit. GamesRadar’s interview gives his account.

That broader context matters when someone says they want things to “look old.” Graphics may be one part of a preferred version of WoW, while the desired experience also involves story, social play, class design, or a general feeling of continuity. Treating the debate as a referendum on polygon counts alone misses that distinction.

The available sources do not establish what share of WoW players prefer legacy graphics. Forum posts document individual opinions, not a representative sample. PC Gamer’s September 21, 2026 report discusses beta interest and quotes a designer on the scale of the numbers, but it does not quantify player preference for old visuals. That report should not be used as evidence that most players prefer old graphics.

The careful conclusion is narrower: some players explicitly value Classic’s old models and visual style, some want updated graphics, and the available material does not measure how prevalent either preference is.
