Valve’s October 22, 2025 Counter-Strike 2 update let players trade five Covert weapon skins for a knife or gloves, creating a new route into the game’s most sought-after items. Reports then put the skin market’s estimated value sharply lower—but “billions wiped” describes a repricing of tracked inventories, not a verified amount of cash traders lost.
What changed in the October 22 update?
Valve expanded the Trade Up Contract to include two new exchanges. Under the official October 22, 2025 patch notes:
- Five StatTrak Covert items can be exchanged for one StatTrak Knife from a collection represented by the inputs.
- Five regular Covert items can be exchanged for one regular Knife or one regular Gloves item from a collection represented by the inputs.
The collection restriction matters: the output comes from among the collections of the items supplied, not from any collection in the game. The patch also introduced official Retakes mode for two defusal map groups, adjusted Inferno and community maps, and included performance and stability work. HLTV’s contemporaneous summary likewise highlighted the contract change and Retakes.
Why did the new contract move prices?
Before the change, a Covert skin was not a direct Trade Up Contract input for a knife or gloves. The new five-item route linked Covert skins to those higher-tier outputs. That altered expectations about the future supply of knives and gloves, while making eligible Covert items useful as contract inputs and potentially increasing demand for them.

That is the market mechanism described in contemporaneous coverage, not proof that it explains every price move. Pricempire marketing manager Ethan MacDonald told Bloomberg, in remarks quoted by GameSpot: “This was a complete shock to the community,” and “This completely changes the supply of Counter-Strike’s most sought-after and expensive tier of items.” Valve’s patch notes explain the rule but do not state a market motive or quantify its effect.
How large was the reported market decline?
There is no single agreed total in the contemporary reports. The estimates use different trackers and time windows, so they should not be averaged into one definitive figure.

| Report and attribution | Reported movement | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Bloomberg, as reported by GameSpot | Estimated market value fell 25% from October 22 to October 23, 2025; the report put the decline at $1.75 billion. | A tracker-based estimate over that stated day-to-day window. |
| Pricempire, as reported by Jaxon.gg | $5.940 billion on October 21 to $4.129 billion after the update, a reported 30.48% fall over 24 hours. | An estimated aggregate value; Jaxon’s report does not make it a ledger of completed sales. |
| Price Empire, as quoted by Tom’s Hardware | A peak above $6.08 billion to a low of $3.08 billion. | A reported peak-to-low tracker series; the cited account describes a different comparison from the other figures. |
These figures are historical estimates reported in October 2025, not a current valuation. The different starting points, lows, and measurement windows help explain why coverage used different “billions wiped” totals.
Did players actually lose billions of dollars?
Not in the sense established by these reports. The quoted totals describe estimated aggregate market value based on tracked item prices and inventories. When listed or estimated prices fall, the calculated value of inventories can fall too, without every holder selling at the lower price. The reports do not provide a comprehensive accounting of realized losses from completed transactions.

Nor does an aggregate percentage tell you what happened to every skin or owner. Individual prices moved differently: Jaxon’s October 23, 2025 report said FAMAS | Roll Cage rose from around $3 before the update to a post-update peak above $50. That is a reported historical example of a potential input moving in the opposite direction to the broader repricing, not a current quote or evidence that all eligible Covert skins rose.

The official patch notes establish the contract rules; contemporary market coverage documents a sharp repricing and offers supply expectations as an explanation. The reported totals do not establish how much cash changed hands, how much any individual player lost, or what the market is worth now. They also do not show that Valve intended to target prices. The figures should be read as time-bound tracker estimates, not as a prediction of what skins will do next.
