Check Activision and platform service status first, then work through basic game and connection checks to narrow down whether the problem is service-side or local.
1. Check Activision and platform service status
Start with Activision’s Online Services page. Check the status for your platform as well. Activision directs players to the relevant platform network when its own game service appears online but connection trouble continues.
If either service reports an interruption, wait and try again later rather than changing router settings. The status page is dynamic, so a past report or an online status at another time cannot establish whether there is an outage now.
2. Restart the game and network equipment
Close and relaunch Black Ops Cold War. If that does not help, restart your PC or console and power-cycle your modem and router. Activision’s connection tips also recommend restarting the router. These are basic checks, not a promise that the error will clear.

3. Check whether the problem is broader than Cold War
Try another internet-connected device or service. If those also struggle, the problem may involve your connection rather than the game alone. Activision recommends checking connection speed and limiting other bandwidth-heavy applications while troubleshooting.
- Pause large downloads, streams, or other heavy network use and retry.
- Check your connection speed and note whether it is unusually slow or unstable.
- If other devices work normally and only Cold War fails, keep investigating the game or its service status.
4. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If practical, connect the PC or console to the router with Ethernet and try again. Activision recommends testing a wired connection. This comparison can help identify whether the wireless path is contributing to the problem, but it does not prove the cause or guarantee a fix. You do not need to buy new equipment just to assume the error is a router fault.

5. Treat NAT status as a clue, not a diagnosis
Some player reports mention Moderate or Strict NAT alongside this error. Those anecdotes do not show that NAT caused the failure, and reported outcomes vary. If you check NAT, record the status and platform as information to include in a support request; do not assume that changing router settings will resolve the error.
One player-submitted discussion describes port forwarding on a specific platform and router setup, but that is not a universal recipe. Port-forwarding instructions depend on the platform and router, and the available evidence does not establish a standard set of changes for this message.

6. Contact support if the error continues
If service status is normal and the basic checks do not help, note your platform, when the error occurs, whether it affects private or solo Zombies sessions, your NAT status if known, and which checks you tried. Use Activision’s support and service information to find the current options.

On July 14, 2022, a Reddit account identifying itself as TreyarchCM said: “We released a backend network update on July 8th at 5 pm/PT that hopefully alleviated it and have reached out to a few players that were consistently encountering it.” This records a historical intervention for reports at that time. It is not a current service update, a guarantee that every case was resolved, or evidence that the error is now widespread.
