Why the PS5 Pro Cost $700 at Launch: Analyst Blames a Lack of Competition

Sony’s $699.99 PS5 Pro launch MSRP drew an analyst’s explanation involving margin protection, supply-chain inflation and limited mid-cycle competition.

Sony set the PS5 Pro’s US launch price at $699.99, and Ampere Analysis analyst Piers Harding-Rolls argued that the lack of a direct mid-cycle rival made that higher price easier to choose. He also pointed to margin protection and supply-chain inflation. That is an analyst’s explanation, not proof of Sony’s internal reasoning—and $699.99 was the September 2024 launch MSRP, not a verified current retail price.

What Sony charged—and what the launch package included

Sony announced PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, with a November 7 launch. Its announced MSRPs were $699.99 in the US, £699.99 in the UK, €799.99 in Europe, and ¥119,980 in Japan, including tax. Those are launch figures; current store prices and availability are not established here. Sony’s announcement set out the pricing and specifications.

The launch console included a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. It did not include a disc drive. Sony sold its PS5 Disc Drive separately; according to Sony’s setup guide, attaching one enables use of PS5 and supported PS4 physical discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD playback.

Why the analyst says competition mattered

In an IGN report published September 11, 2024, Harding-Rolls said Sony’s pricing reflected a combination of a shift toward protecting margins, supply-chain inflation, and less direct competition for a mid-generation upgrade. He contrasted the situation with the previous generation, when Microsoft was preparing Xbox One X. In his view, without a direct rival in this product category, Sony had more room to set a higher price while protecting its margins. IGN reported his analysis; it does not establish which factors Sony itself considered decisive.

Harding-Rolls put the competition argument plainly: “The lack of competition means it is an easier decision for Sony to run with a higher price point to protect its existing margins.” The key qualification is that this is his interpretation of Sony’s pricing environment, not a confirmed account of Sony’s decision-making.

Who Sony’s price was aimed at

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella described the likely buyer as the “price-insensitive PlayStation ultra enthusiast,” arguing that the price would not be a major barrier for that group and that it represented a small portion of the PlayStation fanbase. GameSpot’s September 12, 2024 report also relayed Harding-Rolls’ view that the standard PS5 would remain the value sweet spot for most prospective PS5 buyers. Piscatella’s assessment was similarly direct: “For most prospective PS5 consumers, the standard edition will represent the value sweet spot.” GameSpot reported the analysts’ views; these are assessments, not a guarantee about what any individual buyer should choose.

What the Pro upgrade may mean for your games

Sony positioned the Pro as a graphics and rendering upgrade, not as a new generation of console. In its announcement, the company said the GPU had 67% more compute units and memory was 28% faster than in the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster rendering. Sony also highlighted more powerful ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its machine-learning-based upscaling technology. These are Sony’s manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Sony also cautioned that enhanced features apply only to selected PS5 games and vary by game.

For a buyer, the relevant question is whether the improvements in games they actually play—and on the display they use—are worth paying a premium over a standard PS5. The cited figures alone do not establish how large or noticeable the difference will be in a particular game.

How to judge the value for your situation

  • Consider the Pro if you are an enthusiast who values its game-dependent graphics features enough to justify the premium over a standard PS5.
  • Factor in the separate drive if you want to play physical games or use optical media; the announced Pro package did not include one.
  • Look at the standard PS5 if your priority is value rather than the Pro’s selected-game enhancements. Piscatella and Harding-Rolls both described the standard model as the stronger value choice for most prospective buyers.

There is no universal “worth it” verdict in the launch price alone: a useful comparison depends on today’s prices, the games and features you care about, and whether you need a separate disc drive.
