Why the RTX 5090’s Main PCB Is Incredibly Small (and Why the Card Isn’t)

The RTX 5090 does have an incredibly small main PCB—but not an incredibly small graphics card. NVIDIA’s three-board layout separates the GPU, memory and VRM from the PCIe connector and display outputs while a redesigned cooler handles the 575W load.

The claim is substantially true, but it describes the RTX 5090 Founders Edition’s main high-density PCB—not the complete graphics card. NVIDIA split the design across three connected circuit boards, allowing the GPU, memory and power-delivery circuitry to occupy an unusually compact board while the PCIe connector and display outputs sit on separate boards. The finished card is still 304 mm long, 137 mm high and requires substantial cooling, power and cable clearance.

What “incredibly small” actually means

Photographs of the RTX 5090 Founders Edition show a main board that is dramatically shorter than the RTX 4090 Founders Edition PCB. That board carries the compute and memory hardware, but it is not the whole graphics card. The exposed board shown in teardown coverage lacks the PCIe edge connector, display outputs and fan connections, because those functions are on other boards. Tom’s Hardware’s PCB report documents the board comparison and its power circuitry: RTX 5090 PCB analysis.

NVIDIA has not published an official standalone measurement for the exposed main PCB, so photographs should not be treated as a precise dimension drawing. The useful comparison is engineering density: a very small compute-and-power board supports a flagship GPU, 32GB of memory and a 575W graphics-power rating.

How the three-piece PCB architecture works

NVIDIA describes the Founders Edition as using a “unique 3-piece PCB” together with a double-flow-through cooler in its RTX 50 Series announcement.

  • AI Performance: 772 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2580 MHz Default mode: 2550 MHz(Boost clock)

  • SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce Card
  • Axial-tech fans feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure

1. Main compute and power board

This is the compact, high-density PCB. It carries the GB202 GPU, sixteen reported Samsung GDDR7 packages, most of the voltage-regulation circuitry and connectors that link to the other boards.

2. PCIe connector board

A separate board carries the PCIe x16 interface. Moving that edge connector away from the main board helps NVIDIA avoid extending the compute PCB across the entire card.

3. Display-output board

The rear I/O circuitry, including the display outputs, is placed on another small board. Rear-panel functions can therefore occupy the space they need without forcing a conventional full-length PCB.

This arrangement works with the Founders Edition’s mechanical design and airflow path. It may also offer manufacturing or signal-routing flexibility, but NVIDIA has not publicly established claims that the split definitively improves electrical noise, signal integrity or overclocking headroom.

What the compact main board carries

The board’s small footprint is more remarkable when its specification is listed out. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product page confirms the Blackwell GPU, 32GB of GDDR7 and a 512-bit memory interface.

  • GPU: GB202, reported by Tom’s Hardware as a 92-billion-transistor processor.
  • Memory: 32GB of GDDR7 across sixteen reported packages. Tom’s Hardware gives each package an approximate 14 mm × 12 mm footprint, useful as visual scale rather than as a measurement of the PCB.
  • Memory interface: 512-bit, with NVIDIA listing 1,792GB/s of memory bandwidth in its launch material.
  • Voltage regulation: Tom’s Hardware identifies a reported 30-phase VRM, compared with 23 phases on the RTX 4090 Founders Edition. This is board inspection evidence, not a complete NVIDIA schematic.
  • Power input: The overall design uses a 12V-2×6 connector. Tom’s Hardware reports capability of up to 55A on the auxiliary 12V rail.

575W on a small PCB is the real engineering challenge

NVIDIA rates the RTX 5090 at 575W Total Graphics Power, as shown on its comparison page. That is the graphics card’s rated board power, not the total electricity used by a complete PC. The processor, storage, fans, pumps and motherboard add their own load.

NVIDIA lists a 1,000W recommended system power figure. Its installation guidance supports either three PCIe 8-pin cables through the supplied adapter or one PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for at least 450W. Follow the RTX 5090 user guide for the exact connection procedure. Use dedicated PSU cables, make sure the plug is fully seated and avoid a sharp bend immediately beside the 12V-2×6 connector.

RTX 5090 versus RTX 4090: board size is not card length

Feature RTX 5090 Founders Edition RTX 4090 Founders Edition
GPU memory 32GB GDDR7 24GB GDDR6X
Memory interface 512-bit 384-bit
Rated board power 575W 450W
Card length 304mm 304mm
Founders Edition width Two slots Approximately three slots
PCB architecture Three-piece design Conventional larger-board layout

The key result is not a dramatically shorter card: both Founders Edition models are listed at about 304mm. The RTX 5090 combines a much higher power rating and more memory bandwidth with a two-slot profile, using the split PCB and redesigned cooler to make that possible.

Why the cooler matters as much as the PCB

A compact board alone cannot keep a 575W GPU cool. NVIDIA pairs it with a double-flow-through cooler, a 3D vapor chamber, integrated heat pipes and active fin structures. Founders Edition coverage also identifies liquid-metal thermal-interface material. Tom’s Hardware describes that cooler and board arrangement in its Founders Edition design overview and reports the liquid-metal implementation separately at this cooler analysis.

The split boards leave room for the cooler’s airflow route while keeping the card’s Founders Edition shell two slots thick. That does not reduce the heat produced; it changes how the available volume is allocated between electronics and cooling.

Does it fit a small-form-factor PC?

NVIDIA markets the Founders Edition as SFF-Ready Enthusiast. Tom’s Hardware reported that it was the only RTX 5090 model meeting NVIDIA’s SFF-Ready requirements at the time of its coverage. “SFF-ready” is not a universal fit guarantee.

NVIDIA’s installation envelope is 304mm × 137mm × 61mm, with extra room recommended for the power cable. Before buying, check:

  • GPU length, height and slot thickness supported by the exact case.
  • Clearance for the 12V-2×6 plug and its bend radius.
  • A PSU with adequate capacity and the required native cable or adapter connections.
  • Intake and exhaust airflow capable of moving heat from a roughly 575W GPU.
  • Whether neighboring drives, radiators or side panels obstruct the card or cable.

A two-slot thickness can help in a compact build, but it does not make the RTX 5090 a low-heat component. Case thermal capacity is just as important as the slot specification.

Founders Edition does not define every RTX 5090

The three-board arrangement and two-slot dimensions are specific to NVIDIA’s Founders Edition/reference design. Add-in-board manufacturers can use different PCBs, connectors, power limits and coolers. Many partner cards are thicker or longer, even though they contain the same GB202 GPU. Verify each model’s own dimensions, PSU recommendation and cable location rather than applying Founders Edition measurements to the entire RTX 5090 range.

What the small PCB changes for buyers

Advantages

  • Enables a slimmer two-slot Founders Edition card.
  • Concentrates GPU, memory and VRM components on a compact board.
  • Leaves more of the card’s volume available for the airflow and heatsink structure.

Trade-offs

  • The complete card remains long and can be heavy.
  • Three interconnected boards add connectors and assembly complexity.
  • High current and thermal density are concentrated in a small area.
  • Repair may be more difficult than with a conventional single-board card.

The Founders Edition launched at $1,999 with January 30, 2025 availability. That is a historical launch price, not a verified current street price; current pricing and stock require live retailer information.

The Bottom Line

The RTX 5090’s engineering novelty is a compact compute-and-power PCB integrated into a three-board graphics card. It is exceptionally small for the hardware and 575W load it carries, but the finished Founders Edition is still a 304mm card that needs serious cooling, PSU capacity, cable clearance and case airflow.
