Those failures call for different checks. Note your operating system and storefront, whether the launcher appears, the exact error text, and any recent change to a pack, custom content, graphics driver, or operating system.
Find the point where startup fails
Try to start the game once and observe what happens, without deleting files or changing settings yet. Distinguish between the storefront failing to open, the storefront opening but not handing off to the Sims 3 launcher, the launcher failing to appear, and the launcher appearing but the game not starting after you press Play. Record any error exactly as shown.

- EA app or Steam does not open: The problem is at the storefront or its handoff, not necessarily in the game launcher.
- The Sims 3 launcher does not appear: Focus on the launcher and system compatibility.
- The launcher opens, but Play does nothing or loading crashes: Test the game with custom content disabled and check for a relevant error.
- A named error appears: Use the specific steps below for “version incompatible” or “Disk authorization failure,” if applicable.
EA lists The Sims 3 for EA app, Steam, and Origin, but its troubleshooting guidance does not give a complete, identical sequence for every storefront and operating-system version. Follow the steps that match your platform and symptom.
Check system requirements and graphics drivers
EA advises checking that the computer meets the minimum requirements for both the base game and the most recent installed expansion pack, and recommends current graphics drivers. If the game stopped opening after a driver or operating-system change, include that detail when diagnosing the issue.

EA’s product page lists legacy Windows requirements: XP SP2, Vista SP1, and Windows 7 as minimum operating systems, with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 in its recommended requirements. These are the historical specifications shown on that page, not confirmation of compatibility guarantees for current Windows releases. Check the requirements for your installed packs as well as the base game. EA’s Sims 3 system requirements and EA’s PC troubleshooting guide provide the relevant official guidance.
If the launcher opens but the game crashes while loading
Custom content can cause crashes during loading, so test whether the game starts without it before removing files or assuming that custom content is the cause. On PC, EA’s documented test is:

- Exit the launcher, then open it again.
- Open Installed Content and select Run without custom content.
- Try launching the game. If it loads, add content back one item at a time until you identify the item associated with the failure.
- Remove the problematic item using the launcher.
If the game still fails without custom content, this test has not identified custom content as the cause; move on to the error-specific or platform-specific steps below. EA’s full PC and Mac instructions are in its Sims 3 troubleshooting guide.
If you see “version incompatible” after uninstalling an expansion pack
EA says a leftover Version.tag file can cause the launcher’s “version incompatible” error after a pack is uninstalled. In Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3, delete only Version.tag, then restart the launcher. The game recreates the file. Do not delete saves or other game files as part of this fix. Mac: clear the documented caches carefully
If you are on Mac and suspect a corrupted save or custom-content problem, EA documents removing specific cache files and the contents of the Thumbnails folder. The game recreates the cache files. Before removing custom content or mods, copy their folders to your desktop as a backup.
- In the Sims 3 folder under Documents > Electronic Arts, remove
CASPartCache.package,compositorCache.package,scriptCache.package, andsimCompositorCache.package. - Remove the contents of the Thumbnails folder.
- Try the game again. If the issue continues, EA suggests clearing World Caches, then testing without custom content and mods. Keep the backup until you know whether the game starts.
These are Mac-specific instructions; do not apply them to Windows. EA’s guide also mentions disk-permission repair only for macOS X Yosemite or earlier when the exact error is “Disk authorization failure.” It says newer macOS versions maintain and protect file permissions automatically, so the older repair advice is not needed on those versions. Windows: treat older compatibility workarounds as conditional
An EA Forums community expert suggests manually installing DirectX 9 for the case where the Sims 3 launcher itself will not open. For a different symptom—launcher opens, but the game will not start on a 12th- or 13th-generation Intel processor—the expert points to a separate Alder Lake discussion. These are community suggestions, not established official EA fixes, and the cited forum guidance does not guarantee they will solve the problem. Use them only if the symptom and hardware match, and consult the relevant EA Forums discussion rather than applying a workaround intended for a different launch stage.
When to contact EA support
If the steps that match your platform and symptom do not resolve the failure, contact EA support with enough detail to distinguish a storefront, launcher, or game-start problem. Include your operating system, storefront, installed expansion packs, exact error text (or say that no error appears), the last visible launch stage, and any recent pack, custom-content, driver, or operating-system change. EA’s troubleshooting page is the official starting point for PC and Mac guidance.
