Why Hurting Animals in Video Games Can Feel Wrong

A virtual animal is not a living victim, yet players may object to how a game frames harm. Context—not a universal rule—helps explain why.

A virtual animal is not a living victim: harming one in a game does not physically hurt a real animal. But players can still object to what the game asks them to do, how it frames that choice, and whether it treats cruelty as harmless entertainment. There is no universal rule that every in-game act of animal harm is wrong; context matters.

Why can hurting an animal in a game feel wrong?

One possible reason is that a player sees the animal as vulnerable and undeserving of harm. A nonthreatening creature may feel like an especially unfair target, while an animal attacking the player may be understood differently. That response is not universal, and it does not mean the digital animal literally suffers.

Players may also interpret animal characters differently from human characters. A game can portray an animal as an individual, or make it seem like a disposable resource. Those choices shape the meaning of an action without making virtual harm equivalent to real-world cruelty.

What makes the context matter?

The same action can be presented as defense, survival, hunting, resource gathering, or amusement. To understand why it may trouble a player, consider how the game handles these factors:

Monopoly Animal Crossing New Horizons Edition Board Game for Kids Ages 8 and Up, Fun Game to Play for 2-4 Players
  • MONOPOLY GAME MEETS ANIMAL CROSSING: This twist on classic Monopoly gameplay features artwork, characters, and themes inspired by Nintendo's Animal Crossing New Horizons
  • FUN GAME FOR KIDS: In this edition of the Monopoly game, kids visit islands, collect resources such as bugs, fish, fossils, and fruit. Then sell island resources for Bells, buy decorations, and earn Nook Miles to win
  • MONOPOLY TOKENS: Move around the board as one of 4 Animal Crossing New Horizons inspired tokens. Besides the numbered die, there's a Nook's Cranny die that determines what type of resources can be sold
  • SKILL CARDS: After the first trip around the Monopoly gameboard, players can choose a Skill card with an ability they can use throughout the rest of the game
  • FUN BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR KIDS 8 AND UP: The Monopoly Animal Crossing New Horizons Edition board game is a great choice for game night with the family, and it's a fun thing for kids to do indoors
  • Threat: Is the animal attacking, or is it nonthreatening?
  • Necessity: Must the player harm it to progress, or is the action optional?
  • Purpose: Is the game framing it as defense, survival, or obtaining resources—or as cruelty for its own sake?
  • Reward: Does the game reward the action with points, materials, or other advantages?
  • Consequences: Does the game show any consequences, or make them easy to ignore?
  • Representation: Is the animal treated as an individual or as a disposable object?

These are useful questions, not a formula that produces one answer for every game. In open-world games, hunting mechanics can connect killing animals to crafting and other in-game goods. Game-studies scholar Erik van Ooijen analyzes how such mechanics can express ideas about animals, animal products, and which bodies are protected or excluded from moral concern. His 2018 article discusses Red Dead Redemption (2010), Assassin’s Creed III (2012), and Far Cry 3 (2012): van Ooijen’s analysis of hunting mechanics.

Does virtual animal harm cause real animal cruelty?

The evidence cited here does not establish that harming animals in a game causes players to hurt real animals, or that players who choose it are cruel. The ethical objection can stand on its own as a judgment about a simulated action and the way a game presents it; it need not claim that a real animal was harmed.

Some broader research concerns violent video games generally, but it is not proof about animal-specific gameplay. A 2017 APA Task Force review by Sandra L. Calvert and colleagues reported associations between violent-game use and several aggression-related outcomes, as well as increased desensitization and decreased empathy. The review also found insufficient studies to examine a potential link with delinquency or criminal behavior. Those findings do not show that harming animals in games causes real-world cruelty. Read the APA Task Force review summary.

What does animal-specific research show?

Animal-specific empirical research is limited. Chittaro and Sioni’s 2012 study compared violent and nonviolent versions of a Whac-a-Mole-style game in which nonhuman animals were the victims. The authors wrote, “Well-known findings about desensitization to violence in violent video games were not found in this study.” That result applies to this particular study; it does not establish that games never desensitize players or settle how players respond to animal harm across games.

The authors also cautioned that replacing the violent element might weaken the user experience, and called for more research on the role of victim species. The abstract does not provide participant counts or an effect size. Read the study abstract.

Research on moral disengagement offers another possible lens, but not a definitive answer about virtual animals. Hartmann and colleagues’ 2010 paper discusses cues that may make virtual violence feel more acceptable: an opponent’s misconduct, dehumanization, moral justification, and disregard for or distortion of consequences. The work describes two experiments and notes limitations, so these mechanisms should be treated as possible explanations of framing, not as animal-specific proof. Read Hartmann and colleagues’ paper.

Is it hypocritical to object to animal harm but not human characters?

Not necessarily. Players may distinguish fictional human violence from animal harm because they read the targets and scenarios differently: an animal might appear defenseless, while a human character may be presented as an active threat or opponent. A game’s framing can help explain that difference without proving that every player will react the same way.

Scholarship has described a “digital animal intuition”—the sense that violence against virtual animals can be ethically troubling. That is a useful way to name a possible response, not evidence that all players share it or that its prevalence is known. See Coghlan and Sparrow’s article description.
