PETA’s post at the center of the controversy appeared on December 11, 2025—not when a later article matching the headline was published on May 20, 2026. The post paired a graphic image of Umamusume: Pretty Derby character Silence Suzuka in pain with a message about racehorse injuries and death. Gaming-news reports said fans criticized the image, its use of franchise imagery, and its framing of the real horse’s story.
What PETA posted—and when
GosuGamers reported that PETA published the image on December 11, 2025. Its report described a graphic depiction of Silence Suzuka suffering a leg injury and reproduced the post’s caption: “If Umamusume: Pretty Derby were honest, your favourite horse girl doesn’t get a comeback arc. One failed event, and the race is over forever—just like what happened to the real Silence Suzuka.” The message used the character to draw attention to suffering in horse racing.
PinoyGamer also dated the post to December 11 in its December 25 coverage. The May 20, 2026, Position is Everything article matches the supplied headline, but it is a later account of the dispute, not the date the post first appeared.
Why the image struck a nerve
Silence Suzuka is not only a fictional character: she is based on a real racehorse of the same name. The real horse sustained a fatal injury during the 1998 Autumn Tenno Sho and was subsequently euthanized. That history made the image and caption a reference to a specific tragedy, not just a fictional racing scenario.

Contemporaneous reports described fans objecting to what they regarded as a graphic or sensationalist depiction, the use of Umamusume imagery in the message, and the way the real horse’s history was invoked. Some fans also argued that the post conflicted with Cygames’ derivative-work guidelines. These are criticisms reported by journalists; the available coverage does not establish that every fan shared them or quantify the scale of the reaction.
What Cygames’ derivative-work guidelines say
Cygames’ official derivative-work guidelines acknowledge that many characters are based on real racehorses and that the project was made with the cooperation of people including horse owners. The company asks creators to avoid work that may offend horse fans, owners, or related parties, or harm the image of a racehorse or character.

The guidelines list categories of derivative work Cygames asks users not to publish or use. They include work intended to harm the reputation of the franchise or a third party; violent, grotesque, or sexual depictions; support for or denigration of a particular political, religious, or belief position; antisocial expression; infringement of another party’s rights; commercial use beyond the scope of doujin activity; and other content considered inappropriate under the guidelines. Cygames says the guidelines were established in consultation with companies managing the horses’ names and reserves the final determination of whether a work falls within the listed provisions.
Those rules explain why fans cited the guidelines, but they do not establish that this specific image breached them. The sources reviewed do not show a case-specific finding by Cygames or a court decision about the post. The guideline text alone is not a ruling on the artwork’s legal status.

What is—and is not—confirmed about the artwork
The contemporaneous articles provide secondary reporting about the post and the criticism it drew. The sources reviewed do not verify the artist’s identity, whether PETA obtained permission or a license, or whether Cygames later made a public statement. GosuGamers reported that Cygames had not commented publicly as of its report; that is a time-limited account, not proof that the company never commented afterward.
For that reason, “unofficial” should not be treated as proof that the artwork was unlicensed, unauthorized, or unlawful. Nor do the reports establish a company finding that it violated Cygames’ guidelines. The documented dispute is about the image and message as reported, and fans’ objections to them.
