1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can run a prerecorded YouTube Live stream without a desktop by running FFmpeg on an always-on DigitalOcean Ubuntu Droplet. FFmpeg reads your video or playlist and sends it to YouTube’s ingest server; the Droplet supplies the computer that stays on. To make the stream unattended, secure the YouTube stream key, supervise FFmpeg so it starts on boot and restarts after a failure, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A server alone does not create content or guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
How the setup works
The basic path is prepared media on a DigitalOcean server, FFmpeg publishing a live feed, and YouTube Live receiving it. You do not need OBS or a graphical desktop for this file-to-YouTube workflow. DigitalOcean’s Ubuntu 22.04 tutorial demonstrates FFmpeg publishing a file and looping it, but its example sends video to an Nginx-RTMP server; it is not a tested, turnkey 24/7 YouTube deployment. Adapt the destination to YouTube’s ingest URL and key.
Before you begin
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned launch.
- A prepared video file or playlist hosted on the Droplet, with permission to stream its audio and video.
- An Ubuntu Droplet in a DigitalOcean region that suits your needs, SSH access, and FFmpeg installed using the current package instructions for that operating system.
- The stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Set up the stream
1. Create or select a YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream, then open its stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key.
- Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. Store it in a protected configuration or environment mechanism and restrict access to any file containing it.
Start FFmpeg before scheduling or starting the broadcast, then check the preview and stream-health information in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow has a separate Go Live action; starting the encoder alone may not make the scheduled broadcast public.
2. Prepare the Droplet and media
Create an Ubuntu Droplet and install FFmpeg. Upload the media to the server and confirm the file path, available storage, and audio/video codecs. The right Droplet size depends on the media, whether FFmpeg must encode it, and the available network capacity. No guaranteed minimum size is established here: test your actual workload and watch CPU, memory, network use, and YouTube’s health indicators before relying on it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Publish a file with FFmpeg
DigitalOcean documents the FFmpeg file-source pattern and the -stream_loop -1 option for looping a file indefinitely. Its sample destination is a local Nginx-RTMP server, not YouTube. For YouTube, use the ingest URL and stream key provided in Live Control Room, and keep the key outside the command history and public logs where practical. The precise command depends on your file, codecs, chosen ingest endpoint, and key-storage method; do not assume a generic command will work unchanged on every server or source file.
Configure FFmpeg to read the media in real time, loop it if needed, and publish to YouTube. Validate the container and codecs against YouTube’s current encoder requirements. Once the encoder is running, verify that YouTube receives a preview and reports healthy video and audio before taking the broadcast live.

4. Choose and test encoding settings
Use settings that fit the source quality and the Droplet’s upload capacity. YouTube’s current guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Droplet or network can sustain the feed. Test with audio and motion representative of the real stream, then monitor stream health while broadcasting.
- For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with CBR recommended.
- YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- AAC or MP3 are listed audio options. Check that the selected audio codec and settings are compatible with the source and ingest configuration.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use the endpoint shown in your stream settings.
5. Supervise FFmpeg and test recovery
After a successful manual test, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor configured to start at boot and restart after an unexpected exit. On Linux, systemd is one possible implementation, but DigitalOcean’s cited tutorial does not provide or validate a YouTube-specific systemd unit. Configure bounded or rotated logs, monitoring or alerts, and a maintenance plan for OS updates and media changes.

Before calling the setup nonstop, test a server reboot and an FFmpeg restart, then confirm that the encoder reconnects and YouTube receives the feed again. A restart policy helps recover from process exits; it does not remove the need to monitor the server, network, media, and YouTube stream health.
Choose an approach for a continuous stream
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Want a prepared-video YouTube stream without administering a VPS or process supervisor. | Cloud-based looping with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; one flat price per slot for uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, and the first day is free. |
| FFmpeg direct to YouTube Live | One server-side file or playlist and a preference for a minimal, self-managed setup. | Requires Linux command-line setup, key protection, process supervision, compatibility checks, and resource monitoring. |
| DigitalOcean SRS Marketplace stack | Need a separate media-server layer for protocol bridging, recording, transcoding, or restreaming. | Adds configuration and another server component; it is unnecessary for a simple direct FFmpeg push. DigitalOcean lists RTMP, SRT, HLS, WebRTC, FFmpeg transcoding, recording, and multi-platform restreaming features; the catalog can change. |
| OBS | Desktop production with live sources, camera input, or scene switching. | YouTube describes OBS as free and open source, but a desktop application does not meet a server-only prerecorded-loop requirement. |
| Other hosted continuous-streaming services | Prefer a hosted alternative to operating a VPS. | YouTube lists Gyre and Upstream as cloud options for 24/7 streaming. Verify their current features, pricing, availability, and terms directly; those commercial details are not established here. |

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a single nonstop broadcast being saved as one unlimited recording; if an archive is essential, verify YouTube’s current behavior for your broadcast length and arrange separate recording as needed.
Use media you have rights to stream
A technical ability to loop a file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules. Repeatedly streaming third-party content can create copyright or channel-policy problems even when the feed itself is technically healthy.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | Wrong ingest URL or stream key, live streaming not enabled, or encoder not connected. | Check the URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm activation is complete, inspect FFmpeg output, and verify that the process is running. |
| The preview appears but stream health is poor | Bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity, unstable network, or unsuitable encoding settings. | Reduce bitrate or resolution to suit the source and connection, check the Droplet’s network use, and test again with representative audio and motion. |
| Video works but audio is missing or incompatible | Source audio is absent, incorrectly mapped, or encoded in an unsupported configuration. | Inspect the source’s audio streams, confirm FFmpeg is sending audio, and use an audio format accepted by YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| Stream stops after a server reboot or FFmpeg exit | No boot-enabled supervisor or restart policy, or the process cannot read its configuration or media. | Check supervisor status and logs, file permissions, media path, key configuration, and reboot/restart behavior. |
| The live event does not become public after the encoder connects | A scheduled broadcast may require a separate Go Live action in YouTube Studio. | Check the Live Control Room preview and event state, then use its Go Live control when required. |
