Unreleased game footage can become public through a security intrusion, an exposed development build, or a disclosure by someone with authorized access. Afterward, publishers may investigate, strengthen security, or request takedowns, while online discussion can shift toward unfinished material and disrupt a planned reveal. No reliable industry-wide data establishes which route is most common or what leaks typically cost.
Why do unreleased games leak?
There is no single route, and the available examples do not show how often each one occurs. A leak may involve a deliberate intrusion, an overlooked production asset, or information escaping through ordinary work with employees and outside partners.

Network intrusions and account compromise
An intrusion can expose footage, game source code, development tools, or other files. In June 2021, Electronic Arts said its network had been intruded upon and a limited amount of game source code and related tools stolen. In a July 14 update, EA said an extortion threat had been made and some files released publicly. The company said it was working with federal law-enforcement officials, did not expect a material risk to players, games, or its business, and had made security improvements. Exposed builds and production assets
Games move through many versions and environments before release. A June 2, 2026 article by Denuvo by Irdeto identifies possible exposure points such as forgotten or public build branches, demo environments containing unintended material, review builds that circulate beyond approved windows, debug builds, PDB files, and legacy binaries. The article also describes builds moving among QA, certification, preview events, regional releases, influencers, and platform partners. Human disclosure and authorized external access
Employees may handle confidential game details, budgets, strategies, and projects long before launch. Ubisoft’s Code of Conduct tells staff to limit access to people with a legitimate need, use measures such as NDAs, and take care when discussing work in public spaces or on social media. It also warns that leaks, rumors, and inaccurate speculation can harm value, morale, reputation, and partner trust. External reviewers, QA and localization providers, influencers, and platform partners can have legitimate access to material as part of their work. More authorized access points mean more workflows to manage, but access alone is not evidence that a particular person or group caused a leak.
What does leaked footage actually show?
A clip documents a particular build at a particular time. It may show a prototype, a test environment, a near-launch review build, or something else; the footage alone may not make its maturity clear. It is therefore weak evidence of what the finished game will look or perform like, which features will ship, or whether the release plan will change.

Build maturity matters. A visual glitch or missing feature in an early development build does not establish that the same issue will appear in the released game. Conversely, footage from a more mature build still cannot establish every aspect of the final experience. Treat claims about the finished game as unconfirmed unless supported by official information.

Footage spreads and the conversation shifts
Denuvo by Irdeto Product Manager Andreas Ullmann wrote in a June 2, 2026 article that leaked screenshots, gameplay footage, and build information can circulate across social platforms, Discord communities, streaming channels, and generated-content platforms within minutes. That is the vendor’s characterization of how quickly material may spread, not a measured average for every leak. Once it circulates, people may scrutinize unfinished content before a publisher’s planned campaign begins.

A leak can also change the timing and subject of a reveal. Denuvo describes possible effects including diminished impact for planned announcements, attention moving to unfinished content, technical concerns overshadowing gameplay ideas, and marketing timelines becoming harder to control. These are potential business risks, not quantified outcomes for leaks generally.
Investigation and security changes
A publisher may investigate how material escaped, work with security specialists or law enforcement, and change controls. EA said it worked with federal law-enforcement officials and security experts after its 2021 intrusion and reported making security improvements. Responses depend on what happened and what material was exposed.
Copyright takedowns
Some publishers or rights holders may seek removal of leaked footage. Rockstar Games Customer Support’s policy, last updated January 10, 2025, says posting in-game footage from leaked copies before official release will result in a takedown notice regardless of how the copy was obtained. What is not known about game leaks?
The documented examples illustrate possible pathways and consequences, but do not establish an industry-wide frequency ranking, a typical financial loss, or a general rule that leaks delay games. A specific incident may cause serious disruption; the evidence here does not show that such outcomes are inevitable or quantify how often they occur.
