Nginx does not read Apache’s .htaccess files, so enabling an option in WordPress cannot install server rules by itself.

Page caching, browser caching, Nginx caching, and CDN caching are separate layers. A cached HTML response can coexist with an uncached stylesheet. Diagnose an actual asset response, install the generated rules in the active Nginx configuration, reload safely, purge every relevant cache, and then compare a cold request with a repeat request.

What “static files are not cached” actually means
WordPress performance discussions often use “cache” to describe several different mechanisms:
- Browser caching stores files such as CSS, JavaScript, images, and fonts on a visitor’s device according to response headers.
- Page caching stores generated HTML so WordPress and PHP do less work on a later request.
- Nginx or reverse-proxy caching can store responses on the server or in an intermediary before they reach PHP.
- CDN caching serves copies from edge locations near visitors.
These layers can succeed or fail independently. A page-cache hit proves only that an HTML response was served from a page-cache path; it does not prove that the stylesheet, script, image, or font referenced by that HTML has a useful Cache-Control or Expires value. Always inspect a real asset URL, not just the page source or a plugin status screen.

For a quick check, open a CSS or JavaScript URL in a private browser window and record its response headers. Useful fields include Cache-Control, Expires, ETag, Age, and any CDN cache-status header. A response of 200 says the file was delivered; it does not say how long a browser or intermediary may reuse it.
Why LEMP changes the W3 Total Cache setup
Apache can read per-directory instructions from .htaccess. Nginx has no equivalent directory-level file. Its behavior comes from the server configuration loaded by the Nginx master process, including the specific server block that matches the request. WordPress’s Nginx guidance also notes that WordPress cannot automatically edit this configuration to create rewrite rules.

W3 Total Cache can generate the text you need, but a system administrator must put that text into an included Nginx configuration file or the correct virtual-host block and then reload Nginx. A file sitting in the document root, or a generated snippet stored in a panel but never included, has no effect.
The primary failure: generated rules are not active
What Disk:Enhanced page caching needs
For a normal WordPress installation, the generated Nginx example checks the W3 Total Cache page-cache directory before falling through to the requested URI and finally to WordPress’s index.php. The important path is:

try_files /wp-content/w3tc/pgcache/$cache_uri/_index.html $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;The exact surrounding directives vary with the host template and current plugin settings, so copy the complete block W3 Total Cache displays rather than typing a shortened version. If the try_files rule is missing, in the wrong server block, or ordered after a rule that sends every request directly to PHP, Disk:Enhanced cannot intercept the request.
Why the plugin reports URL-rewrite failure
W3 Total Cache can warn that Page Cache URL rewriting is not working when it cannot see the generated rules being used by Nginx. Disk:Enhanced depends on those rewrites; the disk cache files can exist while requests still bypass them. Treat the warning as a configuration-loading problem first, not as proof that the cache directory is corrupt.

Repair the configuration in the right order
- Generate the current rules. In WordPress, open Performance → Install and copy the Nginx rules shown for the settings currently enabled. Generate them again after changing page-cache, browser-cache, or CDN options because the output can change.
- Inspect the effective configuration. On the server, run
nginx -T. This prints the complete configuration after allincludedirectives are expanded. Search the output for the site’sserver_name, the W3 Total Cache path, and the browser-cache directives. If your host provides an equivalent command or control-panel view, use that, but verify the configuration used by the running process rather than a file chosen by guesswork. - Place the rules in the matching server block. Add the generated
location,try_files, and browser-cache directives to the virtual host that serves the affected domain. If the host requires a separate include file, put the rules there and confirm that the file is included. Preserve the host template’s ordering; a later or broaderlocationcan override an earlier one. - Test before reloading. Run the host’s Nginx configuration test, commonly
nginx -t. Do not reload after a failed test. Fix syntax errors, duplicate directives, missing semicolons, or an incorrect include path first. - Reload Nginx. Use the host’s documented reload action so new workers read the corrected configuration without an unnecessary full stop. Confirm that the reload completed successfully.
- Empty the relevant caches. In W3 Total Cache, purge the page and browser-related caches that apply to your configuration. If a reverse proxy or CDN is in front of Nginx, purge that layer as well. A stale object can make a correct change appear ineffective.
- Verify an actual asset. Request a known CSS, JavaScript, font, or image URL in a private session. Save the response headers on the first request and on a repeat request. Check both the origin hostname and, when applicable, the CDN hostname.
How to read the asset response

A useful repeat request normally shows evidence that an intermediary reused the object, such as an Age value or a provider-specific cache-status header. The absence of those fields is not automatically an error: many origins rely on browser revalidation with ETag or Last-Modified. Judge the result against the policy you intended to set, not against one header alone.
Keep Nginx and W3 Total Cache from fighting over headers
Nginx can provide compression and browser-cache headers directly. WordPress’s Nginx guidance recommends leaving those functions to Nginx rather than enabling duplicate rules in the plugin without knowing which component is authoritative. Two layers that set different Cache-Control, Expires, or compression directives can produce confusing results: the final header may come from Nginx, an upstream proxy, or a CDN, and a later directive can override an earlier one.

Choose one clearly documented owner for each behavior. If Nginx sets long-lived headers for versioned assets, make sure W3 Total Cache is not generating a contradictory policy. Conversely, if the plugin’s generated browser-cache section is the source of the policy, verify that an included Nginx file does not overwrite it. Use nginx -T and the actual HTTP response to identify the final result.
CDN-specific checks
A CDN is an additional cache, not a repair for a broken origin configuration. W3 Total Cache’s CDN workflow requires selecting or creating the provider hostname, testing an asset such as http://cdn.domain.com/favicon.ico, enabling CDN functionality, and emptying the cache. The test must return the expected asset from the configured origin. If it fails, local browser-cache settings cannot make that CDN hostname reliable.

- Origin URL: confirm the CSS, script, font, or image is available directly from the WordPress/Nginx hostname and carries the intended headers.
- CDN URL: confirm the same asset path resolves through the CDN hostname, returns the right content type and status, and exposes the provider’s cache-status information when available.
If the CDN returns a 404, redirects unexpectedly, or serves stale origin content, correct the origin or pull-zone mapping and purge the CDN before changing W3 Total Cache options. Otherwise you may be debugging a CDN routing problem as if it were an Nginx header problem.
Common configuration mistakes
Editing the wrong virtual host
Sites often have separate blocks for HTTP, HTTPS, a canonical hostname, and an administrative or staging hostname. Rules added to an unused block will never affect the request. Match the exact hostname and protocol shown in the asset URL, then verify that block in nginx -T.

Putting directives outside an allowed context
Some directives are valid only in http, server, or location context. Copy the placement supplied by your host or the generated W3 Total Cache snippet. A configuration test catches many context errors before they take a site offline.
Breaking try_files order
The cache-file check must happen before the fallback to the requested URI and index.php. If WordPress receives the request first, PHP generates the page even when a matching W3 Total Cache file exists. If a broad static-file location captures the request without the intended headers, the asset can be delivered while still being revalidated on every visit.

Purging removes stored objects; it does not install missing Nginx directives. First make the active configuration correct, reload Nginx, and then purge. Reversing that order can produce a temporarily empty cache that repopulates with the same incorrect headers.
Testing only in a warm browser
Your normal browser may hold an old response, extension-modified headers, or a service-worker cache. Use a private session or a command-line header request, and test after a purge. Compare a first request with a repeat request rather than relying on a single page-load waterfall.

Version and environment considerations
W3 Total Cache’s current changelog includes fixes affecting browser-cache rewrite rendering and enhanced page caching on Nginx. Record the installed plugin version, WordPress version, Nginx version, PHP handler, and whether a reverse proxy or CDN is present. Generated rules and setting labels can change between plugin releases, so instructions copied from an older installation may no longer match the current output.
Managed hosts may regenerate virtual-host files, place customer directives in a restricted include, or reject direct edits to a distribution-owned configuration. In that environment, use the host’s documented custom-includes mechanism and ask support which file is loaded. The verification requirement remains the same: the effective configuration must contain the rules, the syntax test must pass, and the running workers must be reloaded.
A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Identify one real static asset and note its exact origin and, if applicable, CDN URL.
- Capture
Cache-Control,Expires,ETag,Age, status, and cache-status headers. - Confirm whether the problem affects browser reuse, page-cache delivery, CDN delivery, or more than one layer.
- Copy fresh Nginx rules from Performance → Install.
- Use
nginx -Tto prove that the rules are in the configuration loaded by the active process. - Check the matching
serverblock and the order oftry_filesfallbacks. - Run the host’s configuration test, correct errors, and reload Nginx.
- Purge W3 Total Cache, reverse-proxy, CDN, and browser layers as appropriate.
- Repeat the cold and warm asset requests from a private session.
- Record the W3 Total Cache version and any host, proxy, or CDN changes alongside the result.
What a successful fix looks like
The final test should demonstrate two independent outcomes. First, a request for a cacheable page can be served through the intended W3 Total Cache page-cache path instead of invoking WordPress unnecessarily. Second, a direct request for a CSS, JavaScript, font, or image file returns the intended browser-cache policy from the active Nginx/CDN chain. One result does not substitute for the other.
If the asset still shows a zero-age or no-cache policy after the active configuration has been verified and reloaded, inspect upstream header rewriting and the CDN response next. If the origin is correct but the CDN is wrong, fix the CDN mapping or purge behavior. If both are correct but a single browser remains stale, clear that browser’s storage or service-worker cache rather than changing server rules.
